Abstract Telehealth has shifted the way medical professionals take care of their patients. Telehealth has become normal, that most people would prefer to have their doctor’s appointment via phone or zoom. Patients are able to chat with their medical team whether they’re in the United States or abroad. In the 21st century technology and healthcare go together. The world is always going to change as the technology. As the generation grows, medical professionals will begin to use many different resources to access and see their patients. Patients who suffer from mental health issues, are now able to access the providers quicker. Therapy session can also be held on zoom. Covid-19 has changed the way people operate and how one views their healthcare. With healthcare going mobile it is important that medical professionals protect patient’s right and maintain confidentiality. GUTTMAN KRADER, C. (2021). COVID-19-related telehealth broadens patient population. Dermatology Times, 42(1), 1-42. In this chapter, Guttman speaks about how imperative it is for healthcare professionals to learn how to use telehealth to improve patient care for dermatology needs. A research chart was conducted from the patients who seen the providers in-person for April 2019 and those who were seen via telehealth in April 2020. The patients that did well with the telehealth visits were the younger generations and those who traveled out of state. It is no surprise that the younger generation would do well with telehealth visit because it is now a part of the everyday routine. The 21st century is the ruler of technology. Older patients who had limited access to internet or suffered from major dermatology problems had issues with the telehealth visits. The state of

Massachusetts was told that, all non-emergent appointments had to be made through telehealth. The providers were given the access and resources to start their telehealth appointments. Covid-19 had many appointments cancelled due to the health care crisis, so when the appointments opened back up, there was an influx of patients who wanted to be seen right away. Those patients who issues were minor, love the idea of telehealth appointments (Guttman 2021). Most of the patients did not want to be seen in person, due to the fear of getting Covid-19. Medicaid also played a role in telehealth appointments. Online telehealth visit caused a higher percentage of Medicaid patients who wanted to be seen via telehealth (Guttman 2021). Some of the Medicaid patients were incoherent with their medical treatment, which caused problems for them when it came to treatment plan. Improving access to mental health services in low-income communities. (2021, August 2). Mental Health Weekly Digest, 273. https://link.gale.com/apps/doc/A670365573/OVIC?u=balt47855&sid=bookmarkOVIC&xid=72f97c55 In the new paper article, a reporter talks about the benefits of telehealth for those individuals who suffer from mental health issues and low income families. A research study was conducted at the University of Houston on health care providers improving their patient centered care and telehealth services. Building the trust from a provider, will better improve patient care. If a patient knows that their providers care, one will be able to have a trusting bond with their providers. Patients will be able to share personal information with their provider, without the feeling of being judged or uncomfortable.

Patients who live in low income neighborhoods face many challenges when it comes to mental health and healthcare. With those challenges come many issues with transportation and language barriers. Offering telehealth services will be able to decrease some of those challenges. If a patient does not have a ride to their doctor’s appointment, one will be able to access their provider via telehealth. Telehealth is also good for the patient who suffers from mental health because one will be able to access their appointment anywhere. I believe that when patients are comfortable, their quality of care improves. Mental health has become one of the main topics in today’s world, “In the United States, as much as 14% of children experience emotional problems from birth to five years of age, and 75% of children with diagnosed mental health disorders are seen by pediatric primary care physicians (Mental Health Weekly Digest 2021).” Telehealth is improving patient care all around the world. Van Houten, L., Deegan, K., Siemer, M., & Walsh, S. (2021). A Telehealth Initiative to Decrease No-Show Rates in a Pediatric Asthma Mobile Clinic. Journal of Pediatric Nursing, 59, 143–150. https://doi-org.ccbcmd.idm.oclc.org/10.1016/j.pedn.2021.04.005

In Chicago, Childhood Asthma Surveillance reported in 2016 that emergency department visits and hospitalizations were high among those non- Hispanic black children who suffered from socioeconomic status (Illinois Department of Public Health 2016). In 2018, “7.5% of American children have been told by a health care professional they have asthma while poor and black children were disproportionately affected at 10% and 14% persistence rates in those demographics respectively (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018).” Asthma is a chronic airway issue that causes constricting breathing in patients. The parents of the children were not taking the child to their appointments. The children not showing up for their appointment could cause serious issues with their health and treatment plan.

Due to the amount of children who were missing their appointments, public health officials in Chicago came up with a; Mobile Care Asthma Van. The MCAV was setup outside of schools, so that the children could be seen before or after school care. Telehealth visit were all setup for patients (Van, et al 2021). Allowing parents to access their children’s providers via telephone. The MCAV has saved many children lives and decrease the no show’s appointments. In low income areas parent may not be able to drive or have access to transportation. It is critical for parents to keep their appointments for children who suffer from asthma. Medical professional want to make sure that every child has access to safe and effective health care, no matter the background or social status.
