Nursing Past & Present

Stage 1: Novice- Little to no clinical experience and is task oriented and narrowly focused on “learning the rules” Stage 2: Advanced Beginner- A new graduate usually functions at this level. Stage 3: Competence- Nurses achieve competence after 2-3 years of nursing practice in the same area. Stage 4: Proficient- Able to quickly take in all aspects of a situation and immediately give meaning to the cluster of assessment data. They are a resource for less experienced nurses. Stage 5: Expert- Able to see what needs to be achieved and how to do it. They trust in and use their intuition, often recognizing a problem in the absence of signs and symptoms.

American Nurses Association (ANA): Formed in 1911. They track healthcare legislation, serve as liaison with national government representatives, and communicate the impact of enacted legislation on nursing in their area.

National League for Nursing (NLN): Formed in 1893. Military Image: Throughout the last century nurses were frequently portrayed in uniform providing support at the battlefield, and nurses are still often characterized as warriors fighting disease.

International Council of Nursing (ICN): Represent more that 13 million nurses on a global scale. They support global health policies that advance nursing and improve worldwide health, and strive to improve working conditions for nurses throughout the world.

Handmaiden Image: Portrays the male physician in the dominant role, with the female nurse merely assisting the doctor or supporting the patient.

Specialty Group: Specialty organizations have developed around clinical specialities, group identification, or similarly held values.

Defining Nursing The International Council of Nurses (ICN) represents nurses throughout the world. The ICN defined nursing as, “The unique function of the nurse is to assist the individual, sick or well, in the performance of those activities contributing to health or its recover that he would perform unaided if he had the necessary strength, will or knowledge.” The American Nursing Association defines nursing as “Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations.”
