Opening Questions How did the simulated experience of Olivia Jones’s case make you feel? This virtual simulation helped me to feel slightly more prepared to care for a mother with preeclampsia. I was lost initially because the maternity vsims are different than the med surg ones that we were doing but as I learn where everything is and what needs to be done, I will be more comfortable. Although, I was also stressed on what to do for the patient because she seemed to be in so much discomfort. Describe the actions you felt went well in this scenario. The actions I would say went well in this scenario were the assessments and the administration of the magnesium sulfate after receiving new providers orders.

Scenario Analysis Questions1 EBP What are the indications that Olivia Jones’s preeclampsia has progressed? Indications that her preeclampsia was progressing were her vital signs and her electrolytes. As well as her liver function labs. More signs were the crackles in her lungs, and her epigastric pain that was worsening. PCC

What should the priority teaching for Olivia Jones include?

Priority teaching for Olivia would be her prognosis and her plan of care for her stay. She should also receive education on the medication she received, (magnesium sulfate) which I don’t think I did in the simulation. She should also receive education on her risk for needing induction or a c-section. PCC/I Olivia Jones was placed on magnesium sulfate for treatment of her preeclampsia. What are the indications for this drug, and what should be taught to the patient regarding side effects? This medication is indicated for treatment of preeclampsia. This medication can help to slow or prevent the progression of the preeclampsia into eclampsia and seizures. Key elements that I would include in the handoff report would be gestational age, the mother’s age, the current orders and plan of care, her most recent assessments- including vital signs, the fetal assessment, and my recommendation for monitoring progression. S

What safety measures should be initiated while Olivia Jones is in the hospital?

Safety measures that should be initiated are seizure precautions, decreased stimulation and her being a fall risk. S/QI

Based on your experience with Olivia Jones’s case, reflect on possible nursing actions for enhanced safety and quality improvement.

Some nursing actions that could be done in Olivia Jones case would be giving her a fall risk bracelet, limit visitors, and bringing suction equipment into the room in case of nausea or vomiting.

Concluding Questions Reflecting on Olivia Jones’s case, were there any actions you would do differently? Explain. I would have asked her if there was anything I could do for her nausea or pain sooner so that I could have called the provider sooner and gotten the additional medication order sooner. Describe how you would apply the knowledge and skills that you obtained in Olivia Jones’s case to an actual patient care situation. I would focus on the physical assessments more so than verbal assessments so that I can be more aware of progression of the preeclampsia and I also would call the provider sooner when the patients discomfort is continuing to increase despite interventions being done.
