Ethics in Research Project...

Description

Ethics in Research Project The general research method that we have used and will be using for our SC356 project is through interviews. Since our topic is ‘Is there a correlation between student background and OMDT performance? A case study on Information System students in 2019 at the University of the South Pacific’, we had conducted a formal interview with the coordinator for OMDT (Online Mathematic Diagnostic Tool), Mr Akeshnil Bali. He helped us give the required articles in relation to the topic which helped us compile our research proposal. The articles itself gave us a lot of insight on the concept of OMDT. Mr Bali had also spoken to us and answered our interview questions thus we had an idea on what OMDT actually is. Further to that, interviews will be performed with selected Information System students. These interviews will consist of limited questions and will focus on the students who had poor performance records in OMDT in order to get a better insight as to what might be the root cause instead of randomly stating theories. Adding to that, data will be gathered through the FSTE online mathematics diagnostic tool and from Moodle team/student academic services after approval from the Dean on the details of IS student performances. The data provided will contain the list of IS based students under FSTE participating in OMDT 01 with their corresponding school background, external examination performance, region/location, race and gender, marks achieved and remedial performance if it was required. The data analysis process includes organizing, summarizing, evaluating and visualizing data to help determine trends and relationships among the variables so that meaningful conclusions can be drawn and decisions supported The scope of this research project will indeed have a couple of ethical standards and these include; Data privacy and confidentiality. The data that will be collected by our group in the research being conducted is highly confidential and will be used only for the analytics of the project. No data will be shared during analysis or kept upon completion of the assignment. Furthermore, no names or any identification of students in relation to their OMDT grades or any sort of marks and performance measures will be released. Secondly, there will be no plagiarism from any previous research and all external based content used will be referenced. Also, An ethics form will be filled regarding any related ethical breach occurring during the research process and will be approved by the SC 356 coordinators. Various analytical methods and techniques will be used to accept the alternative hypothesis or accept the null hypothesis on the correlation of student background and OMDT performance. Various tools such as WACA and PSC can be used if applicable with additional methods such as regression analysis will help clearly identify from the data gathered if there is any correlation with student background and performance.
