Opinion Essay Does social media restrict relationships depth?

“Social media does not ruin relationships… Acting single on it actually does.” Katie Davis In an increasingly digital world, social media systems have become deeply embedded in many day-to-day relationships. It has been linked to higher levels of loneliness, jealousy, anxiety, depression, narcissism and a decline in social skills. A behavioral scientist wonders what causes this paradox? Since it has both negative and positive impacts on people’s lives. Positive in the way that people living at distant places get in touch with their relatives by communicating with them personally or posting photos, videos, updates etcetera, thus in this way it is a kind of network between people. However, most of the people post positive aspects of their lives as the highlight reels on social media that result in comparison between the viewers and the ones who are usually viewed by them. What people actually watch has natural reaction to it so it helps misunderstanding take place between relationships, dating and love lives. It also, thus, generates a Fear Of Missing Out commonly called as FOMO. “The best relationships are not posted all over the social media.” Bryant H. McGill For research, many in-depth interviews were conducted with both men and women who were active social media users and in between 28 to 73 years of age found that 60% of people using social media reported that it has impacted their self-esteem in a negative way, 50% reported social media having negative effects on their relationship and 80% reported that is easier to deceive others through their social posting. This indicates that we are living in this world just to get positive reinforcement that is why we share only those things on social media that seem to be highlight reel. We are creating a false reality. If we keep focusing on sharing positive things, how do we express the negative side of life? So sharing only positive things lead us to inferiority complex as everyone may not be capable of affording positivity only. Obviously when inferiority complex happens in a person’s life so in this way, we get or may feel depressed, anxious, alone, jealous and narcissist. Thus in this regard, social media restricts relationship depths. “No relationship is ever a wastage of time. If it did not bring you what you want, it taught you what you do not want.” Brock Lesnar Since mostly people overuse the social media so it can have negative effects on offline relationships at any stage. Suppose a person who is already married gets indulged in conversation with someone on it, he wants to know different things like history, family dynamics, demographics, likes and dislikes, fears, and dreams at the very beginning of a relationship so people do not remain extra careful and thus let sarcasm and jokes in their conversation as they translate very well which leads them to weak relationship building and at

last getting cheated on. This results in misbehavior with your offline partner to further spoil the relationships. Another reason is that people do not think twice before posting anything on social media and, thus, get cheated. They respond to a post or comment out of their emotions. They do not take time to process what they have seen or read and even do not allow themselves time to reflect on their thoughts before commenting out of anger or frustration so in this way, they get their ways parted. “You may not be pushing me away but you are not fighting to keep me either.” Sophia Vergara There are some advantages too of social media when it comes to professional or business relationships to a great extent but to a small when it comes to personal relations. For instance, different companies get in interaction with its audiences through social media to know their needs, wants, interests and much more in order to build strong relationships with them. When companies post about their products, services and ideas on it, it helps them fix problems which their audiences or followers do not like so they get in interaction more effectively and easily online, and it also lets you know how your audiences perceive you as a company or brand. When it comes to personal relationships, people can reach each other through social even living in any part of the world as already mentioned. In short, we can say it helps people connect with each other worldwide. “Whatever is good for your soul, do that in order to build a strong relationship.” Angelina Jolie To conclude this, simply there are advantages and disadvantages of social media as everything in the world has both pros and cons. When it comes to personal relationships, it has more disadvantages than advantages but when it comes to professional relationships, it has somehow more advantages as compared to disadvantages. In personal relationships, how social media plays a negative role in spoiling individuals’ lives and positive role in connecting them together. In professional relationships, it plays a positive role in sense of providing the companies their customers’ insights, ways for overcoming flaws that can help them boost revenues but negative in sense when fake customers give negative reviews, suggestions and feedback for defaming the brands and spreading negative word of mouth to spoil their business....
