Summary

Out of Control Interview...

Description

1. I think the panel interview is essentially a stress interview that the interviewers design to observe Maria’s stress tolerance. This strategy of testing applicant’s stress tolerance at first, and then examining applicant’s knowledge and skill is fine, but the choice of questions in the stress interview seems to be careless. The interviewers at Apex Environmental should better prepare the questions and take out the ones that are discriminatory so that the direction of the interview could be geared towards testing Maria’s stress tolerance in relation to the position that she is applying for. Also, I think having all 5 men as interviewers can be very uncomfortable to applicants especially the females. Applicants might interpret the company as one that discriminates women. The company can place in some female interviewers to reduce possible biases or misconceptions of applicants. 2. I would like to take the offer as long as I figure out the company’s culture and value. Since an engineering firm already can be dominated by males, a culture that is not discriminatory against females is very important. If I were Maria, I would like to talk to the female employees and ask them how it is like working at Apex and how they are treated as minorities. Regardless of how well the job fits me, I would still want to consider the working condition at the company. 3.          

Tell me a little about yourself. If using one word to describe yourself, what would you choose? Explain. What are some of your strengths and weaknesses? Describe a situation where you addressed your customer’s concerns. What were the concerns and how did you handle them? What specific approach did you take? How have your educational and work experiences prepared you for this position? Tell me a time when you encountered a technical problem. What was the situation and how did you solve it using your skills in mechanical engineering? Why are you interested in working for us, an environmental engineering company? What ideas do you have regarding pollution control as an engineer? This position might require some travel. What will be your time commitment by the time we hire you? What are your thoughts about traveling worldwide as part of the job?...
