ACTIVITY: Answer the following questions in a substantial and scientific manner. 1. Which developments in the information age brought significant changes in the way you live your life today? -

Among the developments created in the information age, the existence of Internet in the year 1970 has brought significant changes in the life of every individual in today’s era as well as the development of broadcasting media and smart devices. The Internet has turned our existence upside down. It has revolutionized communications, to the extent that it is now our preferred medium of everyday communication. In almost everything we do, we use the Internet. Ordering a pizza, buying a television, sharing a moment with a friend, sending a picture over instant messaging. Before the Internet, if you wanted to keep up with the news, you had to walk down to the newsstand when it opened in the morning and buy a local edition reporting what had happened the previous day. But today a click or two is enough to read your local paper and any news source from anywhere in the world, updated up to the minute. The information age has brought changes by bringing the information at hand, by connecting with every corner of the world through the internet services. This is possible because of the telecommunication and satellite communication. The people can now buy, use, sell, lease, make use of services like education, medicine facilities, consultations, counseling etc at home without going anywhere. Thus, through these developments, the accessibility, affordability and comfort is provided which has made life easier to live.

2. How did the transmission of information evolve from the ancient times up to the present? -

During the ancient times, the transmission of information has started from passing it through orally but if the receiver of the information is far away from the sender then they had to use pigeons to deliver their message. Aside from it, in its early days, Internet was just a static network which designed to shuttle a small freight of bytes or a short message between two terminals; it was a repository of information

where content was published and maintained only by expert coders. Today, however, immense quantities of information are uploaded and downloaded over this electronic leviathan, and the content is very much our own, for now we are all commentators, publishers, and creators. In the 1980s and 1990s, the Internet widened in scope to encompass the IT capabilities of universities and research centers, and, later on, public entities, institutions, and private enterprises from around the world. The Internet underwent immense growth; it was no longer a state-controlled project, but the largest computer network in the world, comprising over 50,000 sub-networks, 4 million systems, and 70 million users. The emergence of web 2.0 in the first decade of the twenty-first century was itself a revolution in the short history of the Internet, fostering the rise of social media and other interactive, crowd-based communication tools. The Internet was no longer concerned with information exchange alone: it was a sophisticated multidisciplinary tool enabling individuals to create content, communicate with one another, and even escape reality. Today, we can send data from one end of the world to the other in a matter of seconds, make online presentations, live in parallel “game worlds,” and use pictures, video, sound, and text to share our real lives, our genuine identity. Personal stories go public; local issues become global. To sum it up, the transmission of information is definitely much easier today than the earlier times for a reason that there is now the occurrence of “technology” which the information is easier to access. However, although the technology has many advantages brought in our life, its disadvantages are still there so we have to be careful on using it. 3. Social media is a technology which facilitates the sharing of information, ideas and other content in different parts of the world. What do you think will happen if social media is deactivated during the entire lockdown in our country? -

As digital technology arises today, so the wide use of social media among people becomes in demand. Through the years, a lot of people are being interested in engaging themselves online. In terms of

communication, sharing information, and even personal engagements such as selling and buying becomes easier and instant because of social media. People have different reasons why they choose to engage themselves in social media where things got easier and information becomes faster. In using this platform to share information such as news and updates, social media makes it possible to reach larger amount of people in just a short span of time. Given these facts about this new information platform, the rise of social media creates a massive effect and change in our lifestyle. The same goes once it was taken down, especially in this time of lockdown. In my opinion, given the importance and trend of social media today, deactivation of this platform during the entire lockdown in our country, will do no good at all. In times like this, we need more portals to spread awareness and information among people, taking it down will definitely bring drawbacks not just in our economy but, in the capability of the government and every Filipino citizen to provide and access information. 4. From your answer in number 3, state how social media affects and influence your daily living? -

In the middle of a massive and growing coronavirus shutdown, social media is more important than ever. With soft quarantines in place, Facebook, Twitter, and other services are taking on an entirely new valence as the foundation for our everyday lives—a crucial conduit between families, friends, and coworkers, as well as much-needed entertainment. As we become more isolated physically, social media and the web will also have to shoulder the world’s information needs as more and more people seek timely and local information. Social media instantly gives the latest updates and trends, once there is a new information, it is easy for someone to capture it and spread it online to reach the knowledge of everyone. Social media serves as an easy portal for someone, even not a journalist or news reporter, to share news and other information. Once taken down, it would now be hard for people from other places to know what is the current happening. Second, not everything is available in Television. Even news and other television announcements are considered as mass media, still we cannot deny the fact that not everything can be aired on television.

There are circumstances that a news or information is trending online that's why it gets the attention of mass media. And this is the only time the information is being announced to everyone. Taking social media down will also hinders the opportunity for students to have online classes. In this time of pandemic, educational institutions rely and give their courses online. Social media also becomes a portal to students and school stuff to continue having school engagements. At the same, social media plays a crucial role in terms of communication, during this time of outbreak, communication among families are badly needed. Social media makes it possible for everyone to communicate to their relatives. Without the presence of social media, there will also no easy access connection available. Furthermore, if social media would be deactivated in this enhanced community quarantine, this will surely affect me for a reason that in my daily life, I always use social media to talk with my friends, relatives, and other people around the world. Even there is what we called “texting”, it is still much practical for me to use social media in delivering my message to a person who’s far away from me because we don’t need to have any load in transferring our message through social media so this will definitely help us to save our money. Apart from it, as a part of Generation Z, I always use social media for amusement matter that is why if this would be deactivated, I will surely get affected but this will not a hindrance for me to live well. Instead of spending most of my time in social media, I will just shift my time into reading books and to do more substantial things. 5. For nearly a month, we have seen and read a lot of false information on social media. As a science student, how will you wisely use social media to ensure that you do not pass on fabricated and unreliable information? -

Social media allows everyone to be more approachable and personal in sharing updates and comments daily. It allows us to reach out to one another across the thousands of kilometres just with our smartphones or laptops. It also allows the public to share and feedback their thoughts and comments to leaders of the world.

As a 21st century learner, in order to ensure that we do not pass on fabricated and unreliable information, we have to evaluate the information by asking these questions to ourselves: First, identify “who is the creator”, checking the source is important to figure out if this information is fake news through looking at the individual who created it, or understanding the organization behind it. When assessing news, especially that which exists on the Internet, it is important to review the following:

 Do you know the person behind the presentation of the material?  Is there a byline or introduction, and are you aware of the person’s expertise?  Is the author listed on the site, or is there an “about me” section?  Does the organization have an “about us” link?  What is the name of the organization creating or hosting the content?  Look at the URL. Does it have a tilde ~ in it? This is frequently a personal site.  Check for the ending of the website’s URL: .gov, .edu, .mil, and .org are more credible than websites that end in .com, .net, and many others.  Search the Internet for more information about the author.  Search LinkedIn, a social media site for professionals.  Search an online library catalog to see what books the author has written.  Search online research databases to see what the author has written/published.  Is this a firsthand account, or is this being seen through the eyes of an editor? Second, identify “what is the message” to determine if this information is fake news through looking at the message itself and understanding what is being communicated. Review the following: What is the content of the message? Can I find this same news in multiple places? Do multiple places use different experts and sources in their reports? Is the website this news appears on updated regularly? What is the date of the story? Check the sources from the story and their expertise. Are they anonymous?  Are sources in quotes? Quotes lend greater authenticity and credibility.      

 Can you figure out if there is bias in the message? Is there a slant to the news?  Is the news fact or is it more opinion?  What viewpoint is being expressed and what is being left out?  What is the format of the message? Look at visual elements and text elements. Third, identify “why was this created” to determine if this information is fake news through looking at why the message was created. Review the following:      

Can you tell what motivated the creation of this message? Was this message created for profit? Is this news actually an advertisement? Are the sources being paid? Is the author being paid? If the content lists itself as “sponsored content” that means an individual or organization is paying to display the content.

It is always a good idea to verify information before sharing it with others—in person or on social media. Aside from the three questions above, an additional method that works is the CRAAP test—look at the content for its currency—the timeliness of the information, relevance—the importance of the information to your needs, authority—the source of the information, accuracy—the reliability and truthfulness of the information, and purpose—the reason the information exists....
