Part 2 Meds1001 medical science Why did I choose medical science? Biology had always been my most enjoyable class in high school. The concepts the syllabus covered were both engaging and interesting, especially the topics in which the human body was involved. Because of this, I decided to undertake a science degree in Macquarie university in my first-year majoring in human biology. The more I got to understand university level science, my interests started to shift from general science to the medical field. In particular, the unit I enjoyed the most in my first year of doing science was neuroscience. I decided that I wanted to indulge into the medical research component of neurology and human biology and applied for medical science at the University of Sydney majoring in neuroscience. When I hear the words “medical science” I think of its vital importance especially in today’s society, as it is the front line of defence against new diseases and the pillar of our healthcare system.

The fact that herbal, supernatural and even surgical practices were passed down through scrolls and be able to be decoded thousands of years later truly impressed and fascinated me. I had always thought the idea and practice of medical science to be fairly modern, and I have learned that medical science was just as of vital importance in 1200BCE as it is now. The museum tour was an eye opener for me as I was able to realise that my view of medical science had been narrow up until now. Being able to work as a group on these different exhibits showed me how broad and limitless the field of medical science really is....
