What is the claim that Adams makes? 

He claims that he does not need algebraic skills to further his studies into Law.

Identify THREE reasons Adams give to support his claim. 

He does no need to take a math class because he already knows this math.

It will not be useful for his future career.

It will hinder the chances of him getting into law school the following fall.

What evidence does Adams give to support each of the three reasons you listed above? 

He already posses ample math skills in the fact that he took an algebra class in the spring semester in 1992 and scored the highest score on one test. He also worked as a machine and welder contractor for 15 years. This job required knowledge in algebra and geometry.

Adam contacted multiple people in the field he was pursuing and asked them if they used algebra in Law school and they all responded that they did not.

By requiring him to take algebra it would slow him down and he would not be able to attend Law School in the fall. Adam had set up a time line on how long he wanted to take to get his bachelors and how long he would take to get into law school.

4.

Select ONE of the reasons that Adams gives and identify the assumptions. (Remember that assumptions are UNSTATED in the text; finding assumptions requires “reading between the lines.”) 

He posses ample math skills to pass algebra is why he doesn’t need to take it. Some of the assumptions he is making is that the people he is writing this petition to understand how difficult algebra is. He is also assuming that they will understand the knowledge that goes into welding and that the math he used for that job is sufficient enough for algebra.

5.

If you were on the committee, would YOU vote to waive the math requirement for Adams based on his argument? Why or why not? 

If I were on the committee and the all of the facts that he stated about knowing math and doing well in math classes was true. Then I would wave the class

requirement. I would do this because he is very determined to help others and a math class that he already knows all of the work for would be a waste of time. 6.

Do you think the committee itself accepted or denied the request? Why would the committee accept or deny the request? Explain. 

I could see the committee accepting the request because Adam stated multiple claims onto why he shouldn’t have to take the algebra classes. He also stated that he wasn’t trying to get out of the credit amount requirement and that he would take other classes to make sure he met that requirement....
