Monograph on Paulette Tavormina

Paulette Tavormina is a still life photographer who works in New York City. Based on her work, it can be said that she likes to take photographs that are reminiscent of “seventeenth  century Old Master still life painters”. Her influences are Francisco de Zurbarán, Adriaen Coorte and Giovanna Garzoni. She is intrigued byZurbarán's mysterious use of dramatic light, Garzoni's compositions and color palette, and Coorte's unique placements of objects. She was awarded the Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant in 2016. She has written several books, including: “Paulette Tavormina: Seizing Beauty” a nd “Natura Morta B   y Paulette Tavormina”. Paulette’s photographs are showcased in museums all over the world including Paris,  London, Moscow, Lugano, New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Palm Beach, Boston, Palm Desert and San Francisco. Tavormina also works as a commercial photographer meaning she takes photos for people who need help with advertisement, such as food photos (for cookbooks). She has photographed photos for The Fabulous Beekman Boys for their three heirloom cookbooks a nd photographed The Del Posto Cookbook with chef Mark Ladner. Her work has been seen in a couple of movies.

Her monograph book, Paulette Tavormina: Seizing Beauty  was published by The Monacelli Press. In this book she specializes in still life photos, mostly of fruits, flora and artifacts, such as skull heads. Paulette creates personal interpretations of “timeless tableaux”. A ‘Tableaux’ is a group of models or motionless figures representing a scene from a story or from history. The book is also included with still life photos of insects, flowers, jewelry, and broken pieces of porcelain. Some photos also include skulls and birds to remind the viewer of “death

and the passing of all worldly goods”. She was inspired by “symbolic Vanitas paintings” of the 16th and 17th centuries. Therefore she presents the photos as if they were 16th and 17th century paintings I chose this photographer mostly because of her rich use of color. Every single object in her photos have the right amount of vibrance to them. It not only makes the photo feel alive, but it also makes the objects feel alive. I also like the fact that she incorporates different themed objects in one photo. For example, she’ll have birds and fruits in one photo and to her, that symbolizes a mood, or feeling. Finally, I like the feel of the 16th and 17th style painting. If I did not know beforehand that these were photos, I would have thought of them as paintings, because it gives off that vibe. From looking at her photos, I hope that someday I can bring off the feeling of my photos resembling a painting because I really do like that effect of her work. Also, I am going to study her more to see how and what she does to make the objects in her photos so vibrant and how she makes them pop.
