Summary

This assignment deals with stations of play as well as therapeutic toys and my opinions around them...

Description

The station of play I feel that would be least likely to engage is puzzles. Firstly, I am very impatient and often cannot sit still. This makes puzzling difficult and almost unenjoyable. I also find “play” very exciting when it is competitive or strategic, so puzzling is not my favourite pastime. The station of play that I am most inclined to join is art’s and craft’s. I have always been creative, whether it was building miniature houses or my style of school projects. I often find myself gravitating towards the art isle of Dollarama. Paint, stickers, wooden crafts and beads are all up why alley. The best therapeutic toy in my opinion is puppets. Puppets are an extremely versatile toy and can be made on a budget. Puppet shows are a great tool that can open discussion on many various topics - bullying, fire safety, the alphabet, etc. We as CYC’s can also learn a lot about the puppet that they choose. Also, a youth may be able to act out a scenario that they are experiencing without telling the CYC directly what they are going through. It distances the client and their emotions. Puppet play encourages fine motor skills, singing/rhyming, speaking with confidence aloud, as well as artistic skills (youth may create puppets and/ or the background). They can also be used during transition times or to help lead clean up at the end of the day. Overall, puppets are a great therapeutic toy to use in any setting at any time!...
