Description

DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY, NEUROSCIENCE & BEHAVIOUR (PNB) UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS The Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour (PNB) Dept offers the following Level 2 Programs. Some are limited enrollment programs. For the limited enrollment programs, the GPA cut-off is determined each year by the number of students applying to the program. Listed below are the GPA cut-offs from 2021-22. We have also listed the range of the cut-offs over the last several years along with the number of students we look to accept each year in our programs:

The Honours Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour (B.Sc. and B.A.) programs (referred to as Hons PNB). What is the difference between the Hons B.Sc. and the Hons B.A. PNB programs? - the main difference in is Year 1 and the number of Science 1 courses required. - once in the program starting Year 2, the program requirements are identical. - the opportunities for independent lab and thesis research are the same. - you may find differences in the courses the students select from the course lists or in the electives they choose but requirements are the same. Here are the Year 1 requirements: - Year 1 requirements for the Hons B.Sc. PNB programs: 24 units Science 1 courses: Psych 1XX3 (or 1FF3) with at least a B-, Biology 1A03, 1M03, Math 1LS3, one of Chem 1A03 or Physics 1A03, and 3 others of your choosing. Note PSYCH 1X03 (or 1F03) and both Chem 1A03 and Physics 1A03 are required by the end of Year 2. - Year 1 requirements for the Hons B.A. PNB programs: 24 units which must include Psych 1XX3 (or 1FF3) with at least a B-, one of Bio 1P03, 1M03, 1A03 (or Grade 12 Biology), and Math 1LS3. Psych 1X03 (or 1F03 required by end of Lvl 2). Biology 1A03 and 1M03 recommended.

How a student may transfer from the Hons BA PNB to the Hons BSc PNB program: - once in the Hons BA PNB program, students can take the Science 1 courses they are missing as electives while in the Hons BA PNB program. Once they have completed all eight required Science 1 courses, they can request a transfer to the Hons BSc PNB program - however, either program will serve for applying to graduate programs, professional schools

Highlights of the Hons. (BA & BSc) PNB programs: - research focused - opportunities to get involved in research – lab courses, independent research, senior thesis - full year (two half courses) in statistics and research methods - flexibility in choosing Psych/PNB courses from Course List - major areas of research within the PNB department: animal behaviour, cognition & perception. developmental psychology, evolution and social behaviour, systems & behavioural neuroscience, research and clinical training - Lvl 4 Capstone options – thesis, independent research, science communication, inquiry -Has many electives for students looking to complete a minor and/or for fulfilling specific course requirements for graduate/professional programs. -program serves students looking to apply to graduate studies in psychology (both clinical and experimental), for professional studies such as medicine and teaching, for research positions in government, university or industry, and for careers in the health sciences.

Programs offered jointly by Biology and PNB Departments

Honours Biology & PNB (B.Sc.) -this is a double major in Biology and Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour (PNB) - must meet admission requirements for both subject areas - approximately 12 units of required courses from each subject area in each year. - students gain and merge knowledge from both areas allowing them to form a broader perspective of the living world - access to opportunities in both departments - requires a thesis in 4th year and students may choose a thesis from either area: Biology (Bio 4C12) or PNB (PNB 4D09, 4DD6). - few electives - options to apply for further studies in either areas or to apply to professional school, such as medicine.

Honours Neuroscience (B.Sc.) - program is geared towards preparing students for careers in neuroscience research and related fields. - neuroscience is an inherently interdisciplinary field. -program provides students with a rigorous multi-disciplinary science education that includes foundational courses in physics, chemistry, biology, math, and computer programming that are beneficial to a career in neuroscience. - examines research related to neurons and nervous systems - students select courses from 3 different course lists that are relevant to different areas of neuroscience – cellular/molecular courses; systems/circuits courses; and behavioural/cognitive courses - laboratory research experiences may be undertaken with professors from many departments across campus. Topics include biophysical and electrochemical properties of nerve cells, developmental biology of neural circuit formation, processing calculations carried out by the brain, and many other topics. - capstone options include a 12-unit or 9-unit thesis (Neurosci 4L12, 4L09), biology project (Bio 4F06), or Science Communication course (PNB 4SC6). - offers courses specific to the program (e.g., Neurosci 2XN0, 3E03, 4S03) - graduates will be well-positioned to pursue careers in research science, the biotechnology industry, medicine, allied health, education, and government.

What is the difference between Hons Bio/PNB and Hons Neuroscience programs? -Hons. Bio & PNB – is a double major in biology and pnb - Hons Neuroscience – single major with requirements in physics, chemistry, biology, math, and computer science, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of neuroscience. - a thesis in 4th year is required in Bio/PNB; a thesis is one of the options to fulfill the capstone requirement in Neuroscience - both offer same number of electives -

Other PNB Programs offered jointly with other departments: Combined Hons. BA PNB and Another Subject (from Social Sciences or Humanities) -Double major in PNB and another subject from either Social Sciences or Humanities (e.g., Hons BA PNB & Sociology, or Hons BA PNB & Philosophy) - must meet admission requirements for both subject areas - approximately 12 units of required courses from each subject area in each year. - interdisciplinary studies where you can merge knowledge from both areas - access to opportunities in both departments - few electives - options to apply for further studies in either area
