Description

Student’s Name Instructor’s Name Course Date American Government The senate should get rid of the filibuster because it takes up a lot of floor’s time. The filibuster allows the senator or senators to speak for any duration of time that they see fit. The filibuster sometimes lasts for a very long period of time. The Strom Thurmond’s filibuster of the Civil Rights Act of 1957 that was unsuccessful lasted for 24 hours and 18 minutes (Reynolds, 17). This was the longest single-Sanator filibuster ever. This is a clear illustration of how much time the filibuster can consume. However, the House of Representatives came up with a rule that got rid of the unlimited debate and brought about limited debate duration (Peabody, 18). The house of representatives only allows the minority leader to speak for as long as they want without being interrupted. The Senate should get rid of the filibuster because it doesn’t pose a particular topic of discussion. This is because senators are allowed to speak on topics of their choice. The structure of the House of Representatives is different from the structure of the Senate. The House of Representatives consists of 435 seats while the Senate consists of 100 seats (Green, 185). The House of Representatives has 6 members who don’t participate in the voting process: 1 resident commissioner and 5 delegates. Seats of the House of Representatives are apportioned according to each state’s population while seats of the Senate are apportioned at two per state. The leader of the House of Representatives is referred to as the speaker while the leader of the Senate is referred to as the president. After two years the seats of the House of

Representatives are up for reelections while the Senate only carries out reelections of 1/3 of the seats after two years (Green, 185). The House of Representatives is regarded as the lower house while the Senate is regarded as the upper house. Works Cited Green, Antony. "The Senate Results." DOUBLE (2018): 185. Peabody, Robert L.
