Description

The NASW supported the separation of social services from cash assistance in the 1970s because that was a way to separate and prioritize social services needs from financial needs. According to Stern & Axinn, 2018 (p. 232), “Social workers were now free to join other social scientists and social welfare theorists in a search for new forms of income transfers and for new ways of achieving a more equal distribution of income.” I personally believe that the separation hindered the social welfare profession. I think about this as it relates to my line of work. I am a Care Coordinator/Community Health Worker in the medical field. I work in a community clinic alongside social workers. Not only do we care for our patient’s medical needs while in the office, we help them holistically. In our community, most of our patients are of lower socioeconomic status. They deal with many Social Determinants of Health (SDoH), such as housing issues, bills, unemployment, food insecurities and transportation barriers, to name a few. In many situations, they are unable to focus on their health care due to the stressors that arise with their SDoHs. I feel that social workers can be vital in bridging the gap between social service needs and financial needs. With the times changing constantly, the processes are also changing. I think that having social workers to help navigate the welfare system is necessary and could be helpful. Reference: Stern, M. J., & Axinn, J. (2018). Social Welfare (9th Edition).
