Past and Present in “Alzheimer’s” Alzheimer’s by Kelly Cherry is a poem about a man who is suffering from Alzheimer’s. He returns from the hospital and see unfamiliar face standing at the door welcoming him, although he does not recognize the person. However, he recognizes the house, the place, and the music he used to like when he was younger. Although the year of the poem is not indicated, the poem is set to be during the later year of the character of the man in the poem. The poem begins with the main character in his later year suffering from Alzheimer’s coming back from the hospital. The competition between rose and another flower competing which usually symbolizes love and peace indicates the chaos in his mind when he sees the things in his house which was tranquil and at peace before. Although the poem focuses on the man who is in his later years, the man himself thinks he is younger than he actually is which makes the temporal setting really stands out and strikes a comparison between the past which is the present in his mind and the present which is the forgotten past for the man. The poem is also set during the afternoon of the day. As the poet in the line this and that there is always sun after the rain which makes the weather clear was clear and conscious-when he . The sun shining hardens the house and reifies blah blah draws a comparison between seems to draw a comparison between the hardening of the brain and the loss of water from the brain cells which causes the disease.
