Melanie Flores Professor Gina Rho ENG 111 2 April 2018 Response paper 7 In Jennine Capo Crucet’s article, “Taking My Parents To College,” she talks about her first days at Cornell University, when she feels lonely and doesn’t know what she doing compared to the rest of the students there at the university. Crucet comes from an immigrant family and was born in Miami, Florida. Crucet’s parents are from Cuba. Crucet’s family tags along for orientation and stays a little longer for her first days of class. She feels as if she was doing everything wrong. Although her parents were still there for her first days of class, she feels as if they are not because orientation passed. After a while in Cornell Univercity, Crucet still felt as if she was didn’t know what she was doing. At the end of her article, she ends with a definition and she states, “And that, for me, is the quintessential quality of the first- generation college students experience. It’s not even knowing what you don’t know”(25). She notes that her defenition is particular to her experience with the addition of “for me.” This actually makes her defenition more persuasive because it says that it is coming from her own experience at college knowing that she could actually make it throuh school afterall. When Crucet compares her life as a college student to her fist ever college paper topics, the point of her comparing herself to her first college paper topics is that she learned off of those topics because of what her mom told her when Crucet needed help with her fist paper. This is very effective because she got through what she thought was a struggle in college....
