Poetry is an intriguing form of literature that is unlike any other. Poems are the form of writing that uses the most symbolism and imagery to convey profound and potent meanings. The unique characteristic that separates the most from other types of literature is the use of rhyme and rhythm. This aspect a poem gives the writing a nice cadence and makes the poem seem song-like. When writing a poem, the author uses a writing style that paints a very vivid image in the mind of the reader. It is within in this image that the author has created that they put their meaning for writing the poem in the first place. In the poem titled "The Tiger" written by John W. Clarke, the ferocity, and power of God is exhibited in a beautiful, wild animal. In "The Tiger", John W. Clarke paints multiple images of a tiger, and each image displays a different characteristic of the tiger. The tiger that Clarke writes about is used to show the various aspects of the way God acts. As Walters 2

Clarke begins to write about the tiger, he describes it prowling through the jungle and illustrates the tiger so skillfully that the reader almost believes that the tiger is right there with them. The first image Clarke creates of the tiger is one of the tiger's beauty and gracefulness. This image shows how when a person looks over a tiger while still within safety; they can become lost in its majesticness. Clarke uses this side of a tiger to describe how beautiful God can be when He is tranquil. The next image is very contrastive compared to the first one. As the poem goes on, Clarke describes the more wild side of the tiger. He writes about the tiger coming into jungle villages while everyone has to flee for their lives. This conveys the fearsome side of God that people tend to forget He has because of His kindness and gentleness. The tiger is a very fitting image of God to use for literature. It makes God more relatable to people's lives and the fears. When people go to zoos, they are just in awe of the beauty of a tiger. They get to enjoy to its magnificent looks because the viewers are no harm at all because the tiger is held within an enclosure. If a person were to encounter a tiger in the wild, they would forget all about its looks and would be paralyzed with fear because of the power their tiger holds. Just like the tiger, God has a beauty and grace that

people can lose themselves in. While He is graceful and kind, within Him there is a power beyond the imagination of any person, and people tend to forget that. While writing "The Tiger', John W. Clarke uses an "AABB" rhyme scheme which is otherwise known as a clerihew poem. Again, rhythm and rhyme is what separates poetry from all other forms of literature. Because of these qualities that a poem has, it makes poetry almost like a hybrid between song and stories. Also since it has more of a cadence than a typical piece of literature, some people tend to find it more enjoyable to read a poem over a story because the lines flow together more, giving poems a more sing-songy vibe. Overall, John W. Clarke made a beautiful work of art when he wrote "The Tiger". The rhyme scheme he uses for this poem gives it a very smooth flow which adds to the enjoyment of reading the poem. Clarke also found a very powerful and at the same practical symbol to utilize for conveying the complexity of God. This poem is very moving and quite enjoyable to read....
