ENGL 10300-011 PORTFOLIO #1 November 26, 2018

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child I have never been much of a reader myself. However, I have always been fascinated by Harry Potter. I watched every movie more than five times, and I still loved it. After the ending of the Harry Potter movies, there was this book that came out called “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.” I did not intend to read it because I never read a book before on Harry Potter. However, my boyfriend gave it to me as a birthday gift about two years ago; therefore, I had to read it. Once I started reading the book, I could not stop. “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is not written by J.K. Rowling as every other Harry Potter book. It is written by Jack Thorne; However, it is based on an original story by J. K. Rowling. The book is about what happens after the last edition of the book on Harry Potter, the Deathly Hallow. In this new book, Harry Potter is the head of Magical Law Enforcement, he is married to Ginny Weasley, and together they have three children: Lily, James, and Albus. Harry named Albus after his professor Albus Dumbledore. One would think that a child of Harry Potter would have easy years in the Hogwarts school; however, it was precisely the opposite. Harry’s son Albus starts to realize after a while of living in Hogwarts that being a child oh Harry Potter is not all fun and games. It all begins when Albus is sorted into Slytherin and becomes friends with Draco Malfoy’s son, Scorpius. As us fans of Harry Potter know, Harry and Malfoy hated each other. Harry and Albus's relationship is not the best; it is strained. One day Harry’s scar starts to hurt again, and he believes that Albus is in danger and surrounded by darkness. Therefore, Harry forbids Albus to be friends with Scorpius. One day, Albus overheard his father talking to Amos Digory about his son’s, Cedric Diggory’s death.

Amos was asking Harry about a tool for time traveling in order to bring his son back. Harry lied to Amos about not having it. As Albus was listening to all of it, he decided to go back in time and save Cedric Diggory’s life. Albus and Scorpius wanted to follow in the parent’s footsteps of adventure and magic and they stole the tool for traveling in time from the Ministry of Magic and one day escaped from the train to Hogwarts. Unfortunately, even though they had good intentions, their actions had terrible consequences and changed many situations in the real world as they were traveling back in time. Albus and Scorpius traveled in time many times, and every time they found out some circumstances or even people in real life changed or did not even exist when they changed something in the past. Thankfully, Harry and Malfoy found out what their sons were doing, found them and helped them correct everything. The author’s purpose was to show his readers what will happen after the last edition of the Harry Potter book, the Deathly Hallows. The goal was also to make people see how everyone’s destiny is different. Even though Albus was Harry Potters son, he did not have to follow in his father’s footsteps. Albus did not have to be put in the same house as Harry, and he did not have to be enemies with Scorpius just because Harry and Malfoy did not get along. Therefore, while reading the “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” one realizes that no one can say who one can or cannot be friends with. Also, it shows that even though sometimes one’s intentions are right it does not necessarily need to have a good impact on some situations. I fell in love with this book because I am a huge fan of Harry Potter and I loved to read about what happens after the last part of Deathly Hallows. I love reading books that are about adventures and people who have courage, and this is what Harry Potter and the Cursed child book is all about....
