The Effects of Poverty on Education Throughout the course of this semester we were able to learn more about urban education. We have learned that urban schools are typically overcrowded, underfunded, understaffed, prodomentaly filled with minorities and located in low income areas. The Ted Talks from Kandice Sumner and Tony Allen explain the effects of poverty on education. Those who are living in underserved communities are not provided with the same opportunities and resources as other students in different school systems located in wealthier areas. Overall this hurts students' education because they are not receiving the same level of education that their other peers are, which is putting them at a disadvantage. The first Ted Talk by Kandice Sumner discusses how wealthier school systems choose not to help impoverished areas. Kandice talks about her own experience from when she was a child. Both of her parents were not wealthy because they chose jobs to better serve the community, so they were living in a poor neighborhood which came with an underserved school district. Lucky for her she was able to be a part of a program that bussed her to a wealthy neighborhood to get a better education. As she grew up she realized that children in her neighborhood did not have the same opportunities that she did from the school she was attending. Now she works in a school and considers all of her students to be her children. She sees how bright and determined these young children are but they are not given the opportunity to flourish. In Tony Allen’s Ted Talk he explains how parents are actually looked at differently when they are raising their children in poverty. People assume that their parents do not care about them but that is not the case at all. Most of these parents are working as many hours as they can to support their family, so it makes it hard to stay on top of their children's education. He explains that those who do not have the most resources should be getting the better education but that

does not happen at all. Those in poverty do not have a great education or any resources which leaves them stuck in this cycle of poverty. In order to efficiently care about city children the people around them need to start thinking differently in order to enact change. Both of these Ted Talks explain how children of lower income families do not receive the best education or opportunities. Instead of continuing to throw money into school systems that do not need it why not put it into those that do. Wealthier communities and school districts often have an excess of money. Even when they have more than enough funding they do not put the money into any other school but their own. If school districts start to look out for their neighboring children this will help students get a better education. Children who are in impoverished school systems do not expect new books, supplies or equipment but when they do receive them it is life changing. Tony Allen asked the audience to stand up if someone ever invested in them. People remember when others care about them because it impacts their life in a positive way. Both of these discussions convey the message that we the people need to help other people. This is everyone's problem and as a nation we need to work together to fix it. These children in school systems are our future and instead of making them just another statistic we need to stand up and fight for one another. Equal education is just as important as any other social justice issue. Your parents income should not have an effect on your education. Through the different material provided in this course I am able to understand how terrible our school systems still are. Everyone is kept in this bubble of their personal experience and if you went to a wealthy school system you do not get to see both sides of education. You go to school in your home town for 12 years and it is hard to notice the other failing education systems that may just be a town away. This class has opened my eyes to the issues that children,

families and school systems face on a daily basis. Every child deserves the right to an equal education....
