Description

Plato’s Republic Notes: Book 5,6,7 Book 5  

There are 4 forms that regulate the soul He talks a lot about women and how they will be prepared for the future o He says that “if we employ women for the same tasks as men, they must also be taught the same things.” (page 139) o I agree with this because women should have the same rights I feel that throughout this chapter Socrates just explains like how we should live life to the fullest o He talks about what the codes for a relationship is and that there should be same as children o He says that marriage can only happen certain times of the year, and that you are paired o This isn’t necessarily true because a couple should be able to get married whenever, however they want because every wedding is unique so picking a date during the “certain times” would not make it so unique. He says that people usually consider the well being of their family more, however the well being of the whole city should be the same o He talks about the theory of the philosopher and the king o Philosophers are the lovers what they see and what they hear

Book 6 ● It says that only the great knowledge come from the philosophers- love truth ● This chapter also talks about a good city and what it takes to govern it ● He also talks about how the philosophers that they had were not right and were confused in a way, basically useless ● Ship owner example- stronger than everyone, should captain ship ● Our society does not want to think of the correct ways, so the philosophers that are considered to know a lot of information are not considered good ● Then he starts talking about what is called good ● Imagination is the lowest activity that one’s brain can perform ● Belief he says is what makes us have connections with real life situations ● Thought and understanding go within belief ● I think the theme of this chapter was to get us thinking about philosophers and some parts of how they think through logistics Book 7  Effect of education, lack of it  Socrates talks about how each philosopher needs a education to go from average to good.  He brings up a scenarios with a group of people in a cave, while a fire  He says the goal of education is to give everyone that push to become successful  in the city they need to instill those values and morals into each individual, and not make them corrupt o I feel that this is true, because upon the laws and regulations the city enforces is the way how the city will run, if the city les individuals do what they want the city will not be high in morals and value

Socrates has his own method of choosing the kings and the philosophers o He said in order to train well kings and philosopher you have to find the right kids, and then they will learn how to do various different kinds of math o They must also have a physical training o Last they are put to test by going to the cave again, and should be tested up what they learned o The theme was to notify the reader on selecting a king or a philosopher and what makes a good philosopher...
