Description

Galileo’s Starry Messenger Notes  

Galileo thought of his new invention because of someone else’s invention. Galileo’s new invention was name less, therefore it was described similar to the telescope or as he said in the book “spyglass” o This invention had the ability to help you see far Now he describes a demonstration as he describes the surface of the moon. o “The moon is not robed in a smooth and polished surface but is in fact rough and uneven, covered everywhere, just like the Earth’s surface, with huge prominences, deep valleys, and chasms.” (Galileo’s Starry Messenger, page 2)  He mentions that the moon gets its light from the sun and other stars.  He also describes his findings about Mercury and Venus.  He talks about two parts to surface:  Lighter part  Darker part  Lighter part seems to surround and pervade whole hemisphere  While darker part discolors moon’s surface like a cloud and makes it appear covered with spots  Galileo mentions the difference between the stars and the planet that the planets are round in shape and stars don’t have a particular shape.  It makes me wonder, how did people come up with the shape of a star when stars actually are shapeless?  What if someday they discover a planet that isn’t round? Wouldn’t that prove Galileo’s discovery wrong or incomplete?  He touch bases with his other observations such as Nebula, The belt and Sword or Orion, etc.  I understood Galileo’s discoveries more clearly after reading this passage but it also raised a doubt in my mind as to what if there’s more to it than what Galileo found?  Like I mentioned earlier, what if there is a planet in existence that has yet to be discovered and isn’t round?...
