CHAPTER 1 Introduction

In terms of knowledge and competence, the Philippines want to keep up with other countries in Asia that is not implementing K to 12 programs. That is why the country already took the chance to implement the K to 12 program last 2016. Because of this, they add two more years to secondary education level. In entering Senior High School (SHS), students will choose a strand that best suits their skills, abilities and interest. Some students are still not sure on what course should they take. As a result, the course that they took is not aligned with their SHS strand. That is why the researchers chose this study to know what are the effects of taking a course that is not align with their chosen strand and to find out what can be the possible solution that can prevent this kind of dilemma. The researchers are currently enrolled in the strand (GAS) General Academic Strand and taking up the elective of accountancy. The researchers might have the possibility to take a course that is not align with their strand and also, many college friends of the researchers shared their experiences they had when they took a college degree that is not suitable or aligned in their chosen strand. Upon hearing those experiences, the researchers became inspired to resolve this problem, so they use it as their study. In order to attain the data that the researchers needed, we will conduct a survey to the school that made it to the top 20 best schools of Accountancy in the Philippines, Mary the Queen College that located at San Matias, Guagua Pampanga.

In today’s time, everyone needs to understand the consequences of choosing a wrong career, a career that one chooses without the proper list of pros and cons will affect one’s routine and even one’s life. Therefore, it is important to choose a right career to prosper and to fulfil certain goals in life. When a student graduates then there is a possibility that the candidate might find it difficult to make a wise career choice and he or she becomes clueless regarding what he wants to pursue for the future. Most of them handle their scenario by leaving the decision to their family and peers (Kailash Swami, 2017). Deciding the strand or course that a student should take, has to be one of the hardest decisions that they will experience. Because many aspects of their life may affect by this decision. That is why, this decision is very important for every student. In choosing the wrong path or career you will be facing a lot of difficulties that can affect your everyday routine. Choosing the right path can help you reach your goals smoothly and you will not be having a hard time to force yourself in doing a job that is not your dream career. Just like in choosing the strand and the course that the student will take, they should think it twice or even a hundred times before choosing it, because it should be the right one and must be suited to their interest and skills because it has a big impact to their studies and to their future career. The problem of the study became popular with the first-year college students; because there are a lot of cases where as they took a particular course that is not aligned with their Senior High School strand and they are having a hard time because of that, most of them are complaining that they cannot relate or they do not know their lessons because they did not take those lessons in their senior high school days. That is why the

researchers chose their study to make a solution that can help the upcoming senior high school and college students in preventing this kind of problem. The general objective of the study is to gather information regarding what will be the effect of taking course in college even though it is not aligned to the strand that the student took up in the Senior High School and what might be the effects of it on their study habits, behaviour, relationship, grades and to their interest. While the purpose of this study is to give awareness to the upcoming Senior High School and the college students to refresh their minds and think carefully on what path are they going to take. They must ensure that they will not regret any of their decisions, because in every decision that they make has always a corresponding result, and in entering to senior high school they must choose the right path they think they are capable of, so that they will not be confused when they enter college.

Statement of the Problem This research aims to look for the affects of the alignment program of DepEd for those students who took unaligned strand in Mary the Queen College in San Matias, Guagua Pampanga for the second semester of the academic year 2018-2019. The result of this research will be the guidelines and motivation of those upcoming SHS and college students to choose the right path that suits for them.

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of: 1.1 age; 1.2 sex; and 1.3 strand? 2. What are the effects of the alignment program in terms of?

2.1 study habits; 2.2 behaviour; and 2.3 relationship? 3. Is there any significant effects of the alignment program to the students who took unaligned strand? 4. Recommendation of the researchers to surpass the effects of the alignment program of DepEd for those students who took unaligned strand in Mary the Queen College (Pampanga). Theoretical Framework This research work will be anchored on the theory of Bob Stemberg. We use the name Alignment Theory to explain and describe what seems to be at the core of making our lives work. Many psychologists talk about those conditions that promote self-actualization. They are asking questions such as what makes one successful, how we make good choices, and what constitutes happiness. As we review some of these STA. CRUZ ACADEMY OF LUBAO, INC

ideas, you will recognize a common thread that is woven into each-that is the most fulfilled individuals are those who understand who they are and arrange their lives accordingly. They have their goals, expectations, and activities in alignment with their own unique characteristics. In other words they are keeping in STEPP. Bob Sternberg (1996), a psychologist at Yale University has written extensively on what he calls successful intelligence. He has studied people who have achieved their goals and has identified several critical elements. Sternberg's Successful Intelligence Critical Elements 1) Successful people are aware of their strengths and talents. 2) Successful people choose careers that align to these talents. 3) Successful people find environments that value these talents.

This theory shows that you must know yourself more, analyze what are your strengths and talents before you make decisions about your career because these can make you a successful person. Your career will be depends on your strengths and talents. You must think of yourself first and think of those abilities that you have and find a perfect career that suits your abilities in order for you to enjoy that career and grow bigger and bigger until you became successful. If you are not enjoying your career, you will not be successful because you are just trying hard to excel with that career. You are just pushing yourself to do that but you are not happy anymore with your career. Just like

in studying, if you chose a course that is not aligned with your strand or you chose a strand that is not aligned with your preferred course then, you will be having a hard time adjusting yourself with your career. You risk yourself to do the thing that does not make you happy. Evaluate yourself first before you enter such program because this is where your life will be depending on.

Conceptual Framework Based on the review of literature, a conceptual framework has been developed to represent the effects of the alignment program of DepEd, basis for those students who took unaligned strand. CHAPTER 2 Review of Related Literature This chapter presents different studies made by the other researchers including articles and other reading materials. These may be similar or closely related with this study. Furthermore, the literature contributed additional information, ideas and data Local Literatures Aprille Roselle Vince Juanillo (2017) stated that school is a session of survival consistently. One wherein no character is perpetual —not in any case; where there is no ensured power; where you confront an alternate front line one room after another. It is out and out tiring and devouring, yet the drive to have that degree will keep you battling regardless of the expense. Fortunate are the individuals who are continued by their assurance to seek after the degree that will set them up for this present reality while enabling them to experience their enthusiasm. They are the ones who will get up each day and face the taxing day ahead with hopefulness transmitting in their eyes. Unfortunately, not every person has this extravagance. There are the individuals who enter the wrong war zone. The individuals who were intended to sing yet are in shut entryways, explaining scientific conditions; the individuals who were destined to compose however are gathering blood; the individuals who have a place with the stage yet are in the field rather—it is the hardest for these individuals. The ones who pick the wrong course in school have it the most exceedingly terrible, consistently. The thing is, you don't understand this blame in a moment. You're there, perhaps in your first year or junior year, STA. CRUZ ACADEMY OF LUBAO, INC

persuaded that you got your life all together, until the point when it hits you—your course isn't the one for you. When you understand this, you will be shaken deeply. You will bear a procedure that will either make you or break you, and just those sufficient will win. This statement proves that you will feel uncomfortable and you will be suffering once you enter in a wrong course, because all the negative things that you may experience will come into your way. On the other side, taking the right path is the opposite of the feeling when you are in the wrong course. That is why it is important to know yourself and choose the strand that will suit you perfectly.

Chelo Banal – Formoso mentioned that before entering Senior High School, students will choose a track or a specific area of study that will help them to give set of courses related to their desired career. These will improve the student’s skills and build up his or her confidence that is required before entering college. These tracks are fall under four disciplines namely, Academic, Technical- Vocational- Livelihood, Sports, and Arts and Design. In entering college, you must first take 2 years which is the Senior High School. In which you will choose a track that is based on your skills, interest and persona. Every student’s skills will be under in one of the 4 disciplines. These tracks will improve and build up his or her confidence that they can use in college.

Based on the article of CIIT College of Arts and Technology (2018), last 2016 there was a change in the school system where in the Philippines faced a lot of trials and

struggles in adjusting with this new system. With these changes the students can build up their skills and learning and also practice what they have learn, that can help them to be prepared in the true world of reality. K to 12 has tracks and strands that can be choices of senior high school students in choosing what they think are the right path for them....
