Pre-listening activities general information: Pre-listening activities are supposed to….: -introduce the students to the (new) topic -stimulate their interest -personalize a context -reactivate or introduce new words/structures/concepts Aim: to motivate and prepare students (learners)

Useful materials for the pre-listening activities can be: -pictures (they awake the students interest and give them an idea of what to expect) -soft toys (close to their everyday life, can consign important facts better due to the special bonding between the soft toy and the children) - realia (authentic material has a special meaning, because it connects school to the outerworld) -flash cards (good way to stimulate the kids without overwhelming them with the given input) -TRP (short form of total physical response, movement can help the brain to connect and process information easier …especially when it comes to young learners)

Examples for pre-listening activities:

1) Pictures

- “Look at this picture. What can you see?” - “What does this picture remind you off?” -“What do you feel while looking at the different symbols?” -“Have you seen some of the pictures before?”

2) Brainstorming

-“Let’s collect information about the sun.” -“Are there any things you NAN’T do when it is sunny outside?”

3) Soft

toy

(Handpuppe als Alternative)

-“What animal is this?” -“What do you think Mr. Frog does for a living?” (Wetterfrosch) -“What question do you want to ask Mr. Frog about the wheather?” -….

4) Flash

cards

..

-“Can you guess what our next topic will be about?” -“What do you do normally, when it is …..?”

……………….

A couple of other ideas: (surely not every activity is suitable for every group of learners)

Brainstorming: Brain Walking You can paste posters around the classroom and divide students in small groups, students go to the poster and talk about what comes to mind after taking a look at the posters.

Visuals – What Do you Think Happened? Show a picture related to the listening passage and ask to student to come up with ideas of what happened. Students can work in small groups and come up with an idea and share with the rest of the class.

Visuals – Make up a Story Provide learners with some pictures and they have to place the pictures in an order that make sense. You should ask them to write briefly what they think it happened

Visual – Time To Draw Provide the learners with the topic and ask them to draw something related to it Ask them to provide as many details as they can. As a follow-up, we may wish to display the illustrations for all to see. This activity is especially useful for younger learners.

Teach me Give each student a couple of words and expressions. Ask them to explain the words/expressions to one another in pairs....
