Chapter One: Prehistoric Art 

Paleolithic Period Dates: 38,000 BCE to 33,000 BCE o Characteristics:  Old Stone Age  Tools made by flaking and chipping flint pebbles into sharp blades. Used for daily tasks and survival.  Architecture as shelter  Small figures of people and animals were made of bone, ivory, stone, and clay made an appearance in Europe and Asia around early 30,000 BCE. Today, it is known as sculpture in the round and the process used is known as relief sculpture.  Sculptures of women indicates the status of groups of Paleolithic families.



Mesolithic Period Dates: 8,000 BCE to 2700 BCE o Characteristics:  New Stone Age  Polished stone tools and assemblages



Neolithic Period Dates: 8,000 BCE to 65,000 BCE o Characteristics:  House building techniques were discovered  Ridgepole  Wattle and daub  Thatch  Ceremonial and tomb architecture techniques  Dolmen  Capstones  Cairn  Passage grave  Vault  Stonehenge  Started as a ceremony of cremation burials.  Post and lintel construction
