IMPORTANCE OF HUMANITIES 1. Understand the past experiences of people outside their own social and cultural contexts. Art is present wherever we are, we do not need to look far. Art is created by man. It is the product of the artist’s trained ability or mastery of his medium. WHY MAN CREATES ART? 1. Man creates because it is intrinsic in him to do so. 2. Man creates to express himself as an individual or as a member of the group 3. Man creates to express an appreciation of beauty. 4. Man creates because he finds pleasure in creating art. 5. Man creates because man undergoes psychological or emotional healing through the arts.

COMPOSITIONS OF ARTS To appreciate art, we need to study it. We need to understand the basic concepts about art so as to know its essence. I. SUBJECT MATTER Anything could ignite an artist’s imagination, prompting him to create. The artist’s subject matter is an object, a person, a scene, or an event that the work of art depicts. Representational Or Objective Art

GNED 01: ART APPRECIATION ●

An art that has subject matter is called representational or objective art. In representational art, we see recognizable figures or objects. Appearances of objects are represented as faithfully as possible.

Interesting People ● Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” The Human Form ● Venus de Milo ● Michelangelo’s David Activities of Man ● Amorsolo’s “Planting Rice” Commemorative Events ● Manohar’s painting of “Jahangir Receives a Cup from Khusrau”. The painting, commemorates a moment of reconciliation, also a special event during the life of the emperor Jahangir of the Mughal dynasty. It is a portrait of him and his son, Khusrau, making a mends between a violent fight. The majority of Mughal history has been lost, but this painting gives us a brief glimpse into it's history. ● “Blood Compact” by Juan Luna It was a brotherly pact between Rajah Colambu of Mazaua and Magellan after the said rajah welcomed the foreigners from Spain who were in search for the Maluku. Interesting Animal ● “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe ● Brancusi’s “Bird in Space” It has the suggestion of flight, it suggests grace, aspiration, vigor, coupled with speed in the spirit of strength, potency, beauty, just as a bird does. Common Objects ● Still life ● Edward Weston’s Leaf”

Nature ● Claude Monet’s “A Field of Poppies” France, circa 1890 Monet had a house at Giverny, where this painting and many of his famous landscape series were produced. There is a whole group of canvases which take as their motif a field of poppies. Attracted by the vision of the fluttering, rippling colours of the moving carpet of flowers, the artist had already turned to this theme. In the Hermitage canvas he concentrates all his attention of conveying an impression of the massy surface swept sideways by the wind, and totally rejects any attempt to depict details. The modesty of the motif, which is characteristic of most of Monet's works, in no ways detracts from its poetry and the feeling that nature herself breathes within the picture. Deity ● Armida Nyorai (Japanese Buddhism) Non Representational or NonObjective Art ● An art which has NO subject matter is called nonrepresentational or nonobjective art. ● It does not depict recognizable objects. It does not give descriptions or some stories about a subject. Music Through the creative arrangements of sounds, tones, and pitches, a musical composition is created, not representing anything, yet able to move us deeply. Non-Representational Artists Arts’ power to communicate rests on the language of art itself, in the elements of colors, lines, shape, and figures.

FORM

The specific quality or shape of an artistic expression is its form. It includes all the visual aspects of the work that can be isolated and described. It is also the shape by which the artist projects his subject matter. III. CONTENT What the artist is trying to express or communicate is the content of his work. It tells what the work of art is all about, the artist’s subject matter. It is the meaning or the theme expressed by artist. Through the content, the artist’s attitude toward his subject is revealed. The artistic value of the substance or the content of an artwork can be measured by its originality, its imaginative quality, its sincerity, and its truth. IV. MEDIUM Medium is a means by which an artist translates his feelings and thoughts into form. It could also refer to the substance the artistic work is made from. The creative arts are classified according to more specific categories that are related to their medium or technique. V. TECHNIQUE How well an artist knows and uses his medium in achieving what he wants in his technique. It is how he selects and arranges his materials to achieve a specific effect. It is mixing or putting together the substance into the form. This is what makes one artist’s work different from another. Artists working on similar subjects using the same medium accomplish different effects because they employ their own techniques....
