The Prescribing Simulator

Please follow instructions below to avoid the frustration of dropping marks when using the simulator

About the Prescribing Simulator - https://prescribesim.e-lfh.org.uk The Prescribing Simulator is an online training environment that provides the opportunity for prescribers to practice in a simulated online environment at any time or place. Users are presented with clinical scenarios that require a prescription on a certain prescription form. The prescription is then automatically scored, and feedback is provided to guide the user as to where future improvements can be made. Prescribing Simulator is hosted on the e-Learning For Healthcare website (https://portal.e-lfh.org.uk). The platform was developed by the author of the Prescribing Safety Assessment (PSA), Dr Simon Maxwell, and is controlled the British Pharmacological Society. They have agreed use for our students and will support us in developing a limited number of scenarios for our medical students (the rest of the application scenarios are aimed at foundation level doctors). Note that the prescribing simulator DOES NOT FOLLOW THE SAME FORMAT AT PSA EXAM.

Use and Limitations of the prescriber simulator: As a tool, the prescribing simulator is useful to introduce the concepts of electronic prescribing. However, its functionality is limited to hospital prescribing of one-off (stat) and regular medications only; unfortunately, it does not support as required (PRN) or GP prescribing (FP10 prescriptions). We have written a short set of simple scenarios that are designed to support and consolidate your learning in the ‘Introduction to Prescribing’ and ‘Drug Administration’ clinical skills teaching sessions, and these scenarios are collated in the KCL Stage 1 Medical Student assessment. You will see many other more complex scenarios in the tool and you are welcome to browse through these now or later during your course. Please note that the scenarios, your results and feedback are for your own learning but you must save your results as evidence that you have completed the scenarios. You will be able to generate a certificate for your e-portfolio via Keats (in the e-portfolio goal clinical skills 1 section of clinical skills block). Your score will only be analysed together with system timestamps to ensure that it is a unique set of results, but will not be graded.

Instructions for Students: Access to Prescribing Simulator via Athens 1. Education Support Services will email all Stage 1 students with logon details for e-LFH prior to the clinical skills sessions. Students will use the website again next year for MAST so it is important that they keep the logon details safe. 2. When you have your logon, go to https://portal.e-lfh.org.uk 3. Search for “Prescribing Simulator“ in the top search bar 4. Click Enroll (or launch if you already have enrolled) 5. Next time, it should appear on your home page. 6. Bookmark https://prescribesim.e-lfh.org.uk and save your password in the browser!

Instructions for Students: Completing the scenarios 1. Navigate to Assessments using top menu 2. Choose the KCL Introduction to Prescribing 1.0– this contains 4 separate scenarios 3. For each scenario, please read the case presentation and follow the instructions to write a prescription in the chart. 4. Ensure that you select the correct formulation, route, dose, frequency and timing of the medication. You will also be expected to sign the prescription.

5. Please note that in order to get the marks for signing the prescription you SIGN USING YOUR SURNAME ONLY 6. Your marks will not be monitored, but to avoid frustration: when giving your answers, start typing, but then select from the dropdown lists, otherwise the tool might not recognize your answer and give you marks e.g. it will not recognise if you type “6units”, but if you select “6 units” you will get the mark 7. At the end of the assessment you can download proof of completion with the “Download your results” button and saving the pdf file to your computer drive. This can also be done at a later date from the “My Scores” section (see below). You need to upload this pdf to your Keats Portfolio (Kaizen) as evidence of completion. 8. We are aware your mark may not reflect the entirely adequate answers you submitted (see points be). This is outside of our control and your marks will not be reviewed
