1 Lee Persuasive Letter Dear Lola, How are you? Doing well, I hope. Thank you for your last email. It was so good to hear from you after so long. First off, I wanted to congratulate Jess for making it on to her debate team! I’m sure she’ll do great. Secondly, I’m so sorry to hear about your situation at home with Jason. It must be challenging raising a teenage boy. I understand how you feel, and I hope I could give you some advice. Firstly, I suggest limiting the usage of phones during family dinners. Rules can be enforced to ensure that the kids are less tech-centered during dinner time. As we both know, family dinners aren’t just about eating. It’s often the only time where the whole family is at the same place at the same time. So, it is imperative for you to take advantage of the precious time you have each day with your kids. Family mealtimes is a great bonding and conversational tool. You can find out so much about what’s going on in your kids’ social and academic lives. Plus, it also encourages more open and direct conversations between you and your kids. Besides that, you should encourage your kids to be more proactive. Especially Jason since he’s at the age where all he wants to do is just stay home and spend time online. Making your kids more involved in outdoor activities can help in reducing the amount of time they spend on their phones. Spending time on social media is a passive leisure. It’s easy to indulge in and involves mindless activities such as watching reality television. We have to encourage active leisure, activities which are engaging and interactive. You could take them to the park, facilitate activities like puzzles, gardening or reading. These activities may seem boring and lame but can actually be very pleasurable and rewarding if done on a regular basis.

2 Lee Lastly, it in very important to set an example at home. Our own cellphone behaviors can influence our kids’ cellphone involvement too. Being on the phone too much can divert our attention away from our kids. They may feel like we’re not there for them or that we’re unavailable, because we’re always on the phone. Good habits are nurtured at home. We as parents have to put in our own weight for this. Don’t get too worried or nervous over this issue. Good technological habits can be established as a family. As long as there is a balance between his daily life and technology, I’m sure Jason will come to realize that phones aren’t everything. So, smile and don’t give up, Lola. I wish you the best of luck! Keep in touch! Sincerely, Lydia Lee....
