Rahmany-Ghane 1 Nelia Rahmany-Ghane Kyle Freelander ENGH 101-091 10/21/16 Project 3: Outline The Starved Student or How to be Vegan on George Mason University Campus I.Introduction -General to specific “the Funnel”: “Don’t eat the food’s food.” “Hitler only ate vegetables.” “Save a cow, eat a Vegan.” While Veganism was long despised by the masses who believed it to be an obscure and erratic cult, many members of our community have now opened their eyes –and their mouths- to the plentiful benefits of a vegan lifestyle… With the help of constructive discourse with the administration and the support of the many clubs supporting this lifestyle, George Mason University and its dining services should follow the fundamental economy principle and supply the demand for more plant-based food items on campus. Let’s open the dialogue and make a difference; for our health, for the animals, for the Earth - In this source, Jackson reflects on her freshman year in Dartmouth University where her nearly inexistent vegan food option made it impossible to have a normal college life and keep up with her active lifestyle. -Mention of the 5 sub-topics in introduction. -Constructive discourse with the administration of GMU and food services -Rallying GMU Clubs that support a plant based diet -Health benefits of a vegan lifestyle -Impact of a vegan lifestyle on animal life -Environmental benefits of a vegan lifestyle

II. Paragraph 1 Impact of a vegan lifestyle on animal life. -Compassionate students for animals. -Anne Lynch, coauthor of The Animals’ Agenda, over 8,500 million of land animals are killed every year to serve as food for the nation -PETA’s Vegan Report Card -GMU could raise their Vegan Report Card score, attract a large community of compassionate, animal loving students, and save the lives of the thousands of innocent animals.

III. Paragraph 2 Health benefits of a vegan lifestyle. -Research paper covers the health benefits of veganism by leading intensive clinical research including 21 vegans and 25 omnivores. Vegans have a food intake and a biochemical profile that will be expected to be cardio protective, with lower IMCL accumulation and beta-cell protective. - Current health issues created by the average American diet (such as obesity, diabetes or simple the “freshman 15”), especially for students that do not always have the time to eat with regards to nutrition.

IV. Paragraph 3 Environmental benefits of a vegan lifestyle. - The goal of the National Wildlife Federation‘s Campus Ecology Program is to reduce environmental impact, reduce water consumption, and divert solid waste from sewage and trash. In combination with reducing tonnage, number of garbage disposals, purchasing water equipment with reduce gallon per minute, GMU could decrease its carbon footprint by increasing the percentage of plant-based food in its dining halls. - Using less animal fat as cooking oil could also make GMU’s dining halls more sustainable. -Display how greater vegan options on campus could not only benefit health conscious and vegan student, but also the environment by considerable reducing our carbon footprint

V. Paragraph 4 Rallying GMU Clubs that support a plant based diet. - Plenty of student activist from different background and different cause decide to defend the adoption of a plant based diet. Most of these student are also members of clubs, and try to make positive changes on their campuses: Vegetarians, Vegans, Environmentalist, and Animal Activist. -These clubs, through the use of commitment, organization, recruitment, and outreach can truly make eating on campus more convenient for cause conscious student, vegan students or vegetarian students

Rahmany-Ghane 4 - Radbod, the author, helped create UMBC Vegetarians at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and this magazine article is somewhat of a guide on how to form a successful plant-based food club (for whatever cause). - Organizations like The Vegetarian Resource Group, PETA, Vegan Outreach, The Farm Animal Rights Movement (FARM), Compassion Over Killing, and using social media and other methods to recruit members

VI. Paragraph 5 Constructive discourse with the administration of GMU and food services. - Brooke Nunley, President of the Mason Vegan Society, met with the university’s head chef to provide recipes and ideas for vegan dishes and snacks. This greatly influenced the dining hall menu. - Aramark, GMU food service provider, stated that nearly one fourth of the university’s student seek more vegan options on campus. - GMU’s vegan food options and how they were previously increased back in 2010. I want to use this information to propose that with a similar approach, they could again be increased in a near future to match the rise of the vegan student population in GMU in 2016. - The Friend of Animals Club of the University of Pittsburg met every month with Sodexho, its food service administrator to recommend recipes, research by American Dietetic Association regarding the impact of a vegan lifestyle on health, and other possible improvements to be made. - It is said that, throughout the process, the students were upbeat and respectful, treating the staff as collaborators.

Rahmany-Ghane 5 -Talk about the reduction of the prices for vegan food items.

VII. Conclusion Let’s take action. - Supplementing their food service association with research, recipes, tips and keeping a positive attitude. -How will this improve the lives of vegans, vegetarians, and health conscious students on campus? -Summary of previous paragraphs. -Open specific topic to a more general outlook. The growing community following a vegan diet will make a difference for the future generations’ health, the future of our planet, the future of animals. But for now, let’s start to make a difference here on our beautiful campus by seeding plant based foods into GMU dining.
