Summary

Just a brief summary of the project brief and important factors that may have been missed in the project brief...

Description

Context Setting the scene or Background  Engineers need to take more in than just creating a creative idea, they need to take into consideration relevant environmental, social and economical issues into the decision making 

The scoping study requires you to unpack the client brief, understand the community you are designing for and the location and based on this identify potential issues and constraints. It is recommended to achieve the best technical, social, economic and environmental outcomes for the people of Cape York in far North Queensland

Assessment Client

Engineers without boarders (EWB) and Centre for Appropriate Technology

Project

The overall project is to develop a design concept for an engineering related project to assist a community in far North Queensland. The team will act as an Engineering Consultancy Firm. In this task each individual will present a component of the Scoping Study to the client, Engineers Without Borders

Task No.5

Sourcing Materials (what resources are available, for where, include HR)

Consider any issues that may arise as a result of your research and analysis and inform EWB of the current situation in relation to the set task  Example : If recycling is practised, detail what is recycled now or if an education o tourism program exists already, identify to what extent)

What you Submit (What your report should include) Important Factors: Written report (15%), (800-1000 words)  In your report you will need to convince the Client that you understand the project area including location specifies and the communities you are designing for, and aware of any potential challenges.  Introduction  Identify the client, location you are working and the element you will be covering and important issues unpacked from the client brief  Present the findings of your research and analysis on your given element  Include potential technical, social (gender, culture, ect), economic and environmental issues associated with the findings, where relevant. These may be positive or negative.  Professional Connections  Following on from the Mapping Connections Activity in Week 4 Tutorial, identify at least 2 professionals or groups involved in humanitarian engineering who are connected to remote communities in Cape York that you don’t know. Identify their work history, What they studied (specific engineering discipline), What jobs they’ve had along the way, What skills they identify themselves as having, and whether or not this person's career path development is something you might aspire to or not. (You may find some relevant research or background information on working in remote communities from them which you can evaluate using the CRAP Information Retrieval test used in Week 3 Tutorial). Record your findings and any relevant Literature.

Evidence of professional learning You are to respond to Engineers Australia Stage 1 Competency Standard 3.2, Effective oral and written communications and document a “beginning” professional review in your Student ePortfolio. This is your Professional Engineering Portfolio which you will develop across your whole course Questions Think about the communication skills and techniques you use in your tutorial activities, study and class groups?

Briefly describe an aspect of one of your EGB100 required readings that deals with communication and suggest how it informs you’re planning, to develop and implement effective communication skills. [eg Engineering your future: An Australasian guide Communication – Chapter 7: Understanding Communication.

Briefly talk about the different audiences you think a professional engineer would need to communicate with. How and why might the mode and means of communication be different?

Briefly describe why a professional engineer needs to be able to communicate clearly with different audiences.

Helpful Resources  Read and discuss the EWB Challenge design brief with your team to help decide which one of the design areas you will select for your project https://ewbchallenge.org/centre-appropriate-technology  Library resource http://libguides.library.qut.edu.au/EGB100
