Topics we will address include: the various psychological perspectives; proper methods of conducting research, the function of various brain areas, how experiences affect behavior, how our brain constructs a rich representation of our external world, the different ways that we learn and remember events, how hypnosis and psychoactive drugs influence consciousness, and much, much more! Required Textbook: Connect access code to Passer et al. (2020). Psychology: Frontiers and Applications (7th Edition). Connect is an interactive digital copy of the textbook which includes multimedia content including simulations, readings and quizzes. It is required for this course and assessments are based on it. You can purchase the Connect access code from the UFV bookstore site (https://www.ufv.ca/bookstore). Please register for Connect using the following link: https://connect.mheducation.com/class/r-le-grand-psyc-101-on2-winter-2022 This course is asynchronous. This means there are no “live” lectures or classes. A weekly to-do list will be posted each Monday on Blackboard beginning in Week 2. There are also three tests (see schedule below) which will take place in Blackboard.

Research Credit – 4% You will participate in 1.5 hours of psychology research using the Sona Psychology Subject Pool. Most research studies are 30 minutes in duration. The first two 30-minute studies you participate in are worth 1% each, and the third 30-minute study is worth 2% (for a total of 4%). Sign up for research studies here: https://ufv.sona-systems.com Exams (81%) There are three online exams to be completed within Blackboard (each worth 27%). Exams are made up of multiple choice and short answer questions worth a total of 81% of your final grade. Tests are based on the textbook and lecture material. It is important to view the video lectures because there will be material not covered in the textbook. Similarly, not all of the material in the textbook will be covered in the video lectures (but can nevertheless be on the test). Tests are timed and once you begin the test you must complete it within the allotted time. Tests are closed book: no aids are allowed. *There is no “make up” for a missed test. * Be sure to use highly reliable technology to avoid lost internet signal or computer crashes (as this will forfeit your exam attempt). There are no exam resets. Connect Weekly Quizzes (10%): Please register for our Connect site during the first week of class. Watch the instructional video on our Blackboard course that discusses how to register for and use Connect. Connect is an interactive digital textbook which includes multimedia content. For each assigned chapter reading there is an online quiz to be completed using Connect. All quiz questions are taken directly from the textbook, so be sure to study the chapter before taking the quiz. The quiz can be completed anytime before the Sunday 11:30pm of the week that the topic is covered. Each quiz is 20 multiple choice questions and 20 minutes in duration. Be sure to take the quiz by the due date. Because you have a full week to complete the quiz, there is no “make up” for a missed quiz. Weekly Activities (6%) Each week you’ll have the opportunity to earn marks by completing Connect chapter assignments. The activities can be completed anytime before Sunday 11:30pm of the week that the topic is covered. A To-Do list of the various activities to complete will be posted on Blackboard each week. Because you have a full week to complete the quiz, there is no “make up” for a missed activities.

A note on special requests for extra credit or a boost in grade This syllabus describes exactly how final grades are calculated and what each student's grade will be based on. When a student asks for special treatment such as extra credit or a boost in grade, they are asking for the grading policies of the course to be changed from the syllabus (which is not allowed) and for these changes to be applied only to them (which is unfair to other students). All students must be graded by the same standards. The professor can not base one student's final grade on assignments and exams, and base another student's final grade on additional "extra credit" or other deviations from the course syllabus. Thus, any such requests are denied. Illness Accommodations: For short-term medical illness please contact me and submit a form declaring you are ill https://www.ufv.ca/media/assets/risk-and-safety/covid-19-safety-response/academic-guidelines/UFVStudent-Declaration-of-Absence.pdf If you miss a test due to illness, you must submit the declaration form prior to the test time and you will take a cumulative make-up exam during the final exam period. Options for students with long term illness or difficulties arising from bereavement: If you find you are unable to return to schoolwork, there are several options.   

If it is within the withdrawal period, you can withdraw from the course. https://www.ufv.ca/registration/withdrawals-and-refunds/ If it past the withdrawal date, you can apply for a late withdrawal due to extenuating circumstances. https://www.ufv.ca/ai/appeals/late-withdrawal-appeal/ If you could complete with some accommodation (for example, if your illness has resulted in a physical change that makes coursework difficult), you can contact the Centre for Accessibility to discuss assistance. If you are uncertain how to proceed or wish to ask for a different solution, then I am happy to refer you to the Associate Dean of Arts for Students, or the Director of Student Services. Cheating Cheating is such a serious violation of acceptable behavior that it can result in failing the course or being expelled from the university. I believe no one in our course would deliberately cheat. However, students occasionally don’t realize their behavior constitutes cheating. Cheating in this course includes:  working with others on tests/quizzes/assignments  the use of notes, the textbook, websites or other aids during a quiz/test  using or sharing test questions and answers UFV Plagiarism and Cheating Policy:

What is my current grade in the course? No need to ask your professor - calculate it the same way they would.

You’ll need two things: 1) The course syllabus showing how much each assessment is worth, and 2) your grade on each assessment. Take the score you earned on each assessment and multiply it by the proportion of what the assessment is worth. Then add them up. That’s it! For an online grade calculator go here: http://www.benegg.net/grade_calculator.html Here’s an example In a History course Parminder received 62% on her first test, 73% on her second test and 78% on her term paper. The two tests were worth 35% each and the term paper was worth 30%: 62 x .35 = 21.7 73 x .35 = 25.55 78 x .30 = 23.4

(21.7 + 25.55 + 23.4 = Parminder’s cumulative grade in the course was 70.65%)...
