Depressant which are drugs that temporarily induces a calming/drowsy effect.

Common side effects include: loss of motor coordination’s, impairs reasoning, balance, speech, reaction time and judgement. Large amounts can lead to nausea, vomiting, lack of psychical control, loss of consciousness and possible death

2. What are anabolic steroids? What are some street names for anabolic steroids? What are the side effects of steroids?

Known as steroids, roids, arnalds, gym candy, juice, pumpers, stackers. Man-made substances that are similar to male sex hormones. Can be prescribed to treat medical condition related to low hormones.

Side effects include: higher risk of heart attacks, strokes and liver problems. Can alter hair loss and other psychical traits. Though no addictive, steroids can cause a psychological dependency driven by self -image, competition or pressure of society.

3. In which category of drugs does cocaine fall? What are side effects of cocaine use?

Coke comes from the cocoa plant, it’s a powerful stimulant which is a class of drug that speeds up activity in the brain and nervous system.

Side effects include: increased energy, decreased appetite, mental alertness in the user, disturbances in heart rhythm, nausea, respiratory failure, stroke and seizures.

Withdrawal symptoms can be extreme for this drug is highly addictive.

4. Look under the category of dissociative drugs. How does a user ingest PCP? What is the use of ketamine in veterinary offices? Where is dextromethorphan found?

PCP is applied in either liquid or powder form to marijuana and cigarettes then smoked. Users feel disconnected form reality and out of control, displaying unpredictable or violent behaviors at times. High doses can result in convulsions, coma, high fever or death

Ketamine is less potent than PCP. Users report a terrifying feeling, like a near-death experience while on the drug. Veterinarians use this as an anesthetic.

Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant found in nonprescription cold and cough medications. At higher doses, can produce effects similar to PCP or ketamine.

5. What are some street names of GHB and rohypnol? How can GHB and rohypnol be used as date rape drugs?

GHB: G, liquid ecstasy, Georgia home boy, soap, vita-G. Depressant that is abused by partygoers for its relaxing effects and by body builders for its ability to promote muscle growth. At high doses or mixed, GHB can quickly lead to seizures, loss of consciousness, coma or death.

Rohypnol: roofies, rophie, roche, forget-me. Benzodiazepine, a class of drug that is prescribed to treat anxiety disorders. Not approved in the US however. Can be taken in tablet form or dissolved in a drink. If mixed, it can be deadly.

Both drugs are often colourless, tasteless, and odorless. It can be used to spike someone’s drink without their knowledge. Victims may be physically unable to resist an assault and may be unable to recall what happened the next day.

6. List three hallucinogens. What are hallucinations? What are the physical effects of hallucinogens?

Hallucinogens include: Psilocybin mushrooms, LSD, Mescaline (cacti). Drugs that cause hallucinations – distortions in perception of reality and time. Users may see, hear, or feel things that seem real but aren’t actually there. May experience several emotions at once or rapidly swing from one emotion to another.

Physical effects include: dilated pupils, higher body temp, increased heart rate and blood pressure, sweating, loss of appetite, sleeplessness, dry mouth and tremors.

7. What are some street names of heroin? What are the side effects of heroin? What are the withdrawal symptoms of heroin?

AKA smack, H, skag, junk, black tar. Widely abused opiate which is a class of drug that is derived from the poppy plant. Some opiates have been prescribed to treat pain but not heroin – has no medical use.

Causes a rush of pleasure in the user that is usually followed by several hours of drowsiness. Can also cause nausea, vomiting and sever itching. Extremely addictive, withdrawals include: restlessness, muscle and bone pain, insomnia, diarrhea, vomiting and cold flashes

8. List three household products that can be used as inhalants. Can inhalants cause brain damage?

Chemicals that can be used to get an immediate high. Found in products such as aerosol sprays, cleaning fluid, glue, paint, gasoline, propane, nail polish remover, marker pens, and correction fluid.

Can cause brain damage because it hits brains with great force and speed, can even lead to sudden death.

9. List some street names of marijuana. What are the side effects of marijuana?

AKA: pot, herb, weed, grass, widow, ganja, hash.

Causes a peaceful/euphoric sensation in the user. Soon the sensation passes and the user may feel sleepy or depressed. Symptoms include: impairs memory and attention span, affects balance, coordination and slow reaction time

10. What are some street names of MDMA? How is MDMA taken? In which categories of drugs does MDMA fall? Can MDMA cause panic attacks?

AKA: ecstasy, E, X, XTC, Adam, hug, love drug, roll. Drug that acts as both stimulant and hallucinogen. Can produce both energizing effects and distortions in perception and time. Many so called ecstasy tabs include other drugs other than MDMA such as methamphetamine, caffeine, dextromethorphan or the diet drug ephedrine.

Symptoms include: chills, muscle cramping, involuntary teeth clenching, significant reductions in mental abilities. Overdosing can cause panic attacks, loss of consciousness, and even seizures. Users are always be a risk of dehydrations, hyperthermia and heart or kidney failure.

11. List some street names of methamphetamine. How is methamphetamine taken? What are methamphetamine’s effects on long-term users?

AKA: speed, meth, chalk, ice, crystal, crank, glass. Taken by mouth or snort. Stimulant drug that small amounts have strong effects on the brain and nervous system.

Causes mental alertness and increases energy nut has toxic effects on the brain. High doses can elevate body temp to dangerous or lethal levels and may also cause convulsions.

Highly addictive, chronic users may develop: violent behavior, anxiety, insomnia, paranoia, delusions and psychological dependency to the drug.

12. Is nicotine addictive? What percentage of cancer deaths are caused by nicotine?

Addictive substance in tobacco. Acts as a stimulant or a sedative which is a drug that produces a calming or soothing effect.

Withdrawals include: intense cravings, irritability, sleep disturbances caused by the body’s dependency. Responsible for 30% of cancer deaths, 90% of lung cancer. Goes back to mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, bladder and kidney cancer
