Description

PSY 215 Module Eight Activity Template For this journal activity, you will focus on reconstructing your view of what it means to be abnormal. Specifically, consider the notion of the humanity in abnormality. Then respond to the following prompts with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Address the rubric criteria listed below and support your answers with a credible source when necessary. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. 

Discuss what it means to view our individual differences through a non-pathologizing lens. To view individual differences through a non-pathologizing lens is to look at difficulties in patients not as a disease or needing a diagnosis and without bias. Take hyperactivity for example; if a child comes in who displays characteristics of ADHD we may look at the environment in which the child is displaying such behaviors and try to change the environment and teach coping skills instead of diagnosing and medicating.

In recent times, people have begun to adopt a non-clinical view of psychological conditions—as differences, not disorders. Discuss the costs and benefits of viewing psychological traits, symptoms, and conditions in this manner. The costs of adopting a non-clinical view of psychological conditions would include a lack of medical attention. If a psychological condition lacks the medical attention it needs, the ultimate price paid could be one taking their own life. PTSD is one condition that may need more medical attention than talking to a therapist, they may need to seek help with medication along with therapy. The ultimate cost of not receiving the help they need would be taking one’s own life. Benefits of adopting a non-clinical view would be that doctors do not push medication on people and are not quick to put a diagnosis on patients.

Think of an abnormal behavior that may be viewed as a deficit or a weakness. Discuss how aspects of this behavior may be reframed and reapplied as a strength. ADHD is an abnormal behavior that tends to be viewed as a deficit. Children who are diagnosed ADHD may be viewed as lacking attention and the inability to sit still while in a learning environment, they can be seen as a distraction in class. If you look beyond the surface of the diagnosis and behaviors to get to a root, sometimes kids act out because they are bored, or the topic does not interest them. Finding a topic of interest could help a child flourish. For example, if a child is interested in computer graphics, with the right support, this child may become a prestigious graphic designer.
