Description

PSY 215 Module Six Activity Template For this journal activity, you will focus on the influence of language on shaping perceptions of human behavior. Specifically, consider how the words we use can have a dramatic positive or negative influence on how we view the biological, psychological, and social orientations of others. Respond to the following prompts with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Address the rubric criteria listed below and support your answers with a credible source when necessary. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. 

Describe how the words we use to discuss gender and sexuality shape our perception of what is considered normal or abnormal. Provide an example within your response.

Our perceptions of what is normal or abnormal is directly affected by the way we discuss sexuality and gender. While growing up I was always taught that you were either male or female. While there are certain rules for both male or female but if you deviate from either of them then they think you are acting abnormal. As I grew up I realized that there are certain roles that males and females that should “act”. While working with children some parents do not allow their children to “switch roles” while playing with other children. 

Imagine engaging in conversation with family, friends, or colleagues and eventually realizing that they were inadvertently promoting stereotypes about gender or sexuality. Describe the thoughts and feelings that you might experience during such a conversation.

While engaging in a conversation with family about stereotypes about gender or sexuality I realize that people have very different views on this subject. I was feeling disappointment and anger because they have no idea how ignorant they sound. It has been frustrating to sit here and listen to these conversations. I believe that everyone can achieve their dreams or ambitions regardless of their gender or sexuality. 

Describe the language used within your own culture (e.g., family members, friends, colleagues) when discussing gender and sexuality.

In my own culture we describe rough & tough kids as being 100% boys, and the girls are just as rough so we don’t treat them as fragile little beings. Being that I grew up with all boys I was not a “girly, girl” I was the one that climbed trees, played full contact football, and any other thing that boys do. I was considered a tom-boy. I have since learned that girls are still girls even though they are rough & tough like little boys.
