Using this template, respond to the below prompts, which focus on deconstructing the stigma associated with abnormal behavior. Support your position with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences per bullet, using credible sources. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information.

Often a person describes an abnormal behavior as weird—a term that can elicit a range of emotional responses (e.g., fear, anger, guilt, curiosity, withdrawal, compassion). Describe a common psychological reaction that a person might have after hearing this description.

It is extremely important to be able to recognize and understand what triggers people because most psychological reactions are coupled with trauma and stress. After hearing this description of abnormal behavior, one might be confused because they have experienced those emotional responses. Since they do not understand the variety of the definition their actions may change. They may begin to wonder if their behavior in response to these emotions have been considered abnormal. They may begin to alter their thinking and social interaction in order to be deemed as acting normal.

Describe why witnessing an abnormal behavior may cause a person to experience psychological discomfort.

Being uncomfortable is more common than most realize, often people won't express their uncomfortableness. Working in customer service gives me a front row into abnormal behaviors, or what I call “lash outs”. Although I only see the lash out and not the factors that contribute to the customer becoming extremely angry, I deem this as abnormal behavior. Witnessing this behavior makes me no longer want to help this individual. “...a behavior is most likely to be viewed as abnormal when it violates the standards of society...” (Hooley et. Al., 2019). Because this person acted out and became extremely angry everyone around them became uncomfortable and attempted to avoid them.

Describe the feelings a person may experience when witnessing a behavior that deviates from the norm.

Social and cultural norms are expected behaviors based on the shared belief within that specific society or culture. “The norm” for most Indian cultures is arranged marriages, so deviating from that norm may result in the elders disapproval and social exile. The elders may feel like the new generation is trying to dismantle years of tradition. Social and cultural standards provide a guide for appropriate and inappropriate behavior.

Ironically, it is normal to perceive abnormal behavior as atypical, uncomfortable, or strange. However, the labels that we use to describe abnormal behavior could contribute to its stigma. In your own words, describe how abnormalities in the mind are not different from other physical or biological abnormalities.

Abnormal Psychology

I think the stigma associated with abnormal behavior is due to lack of understanding. Mental abnormalities are no different than physical ones, everything begins in the brain. Both abnormalities interfere with day-to-day activities, alters social interaction, and influences communities.
