What is object permanence? Why do we care about it? Object Permanence: the recognition that objects continue to exist even when they can’t see it anymore. Egocentrism? Tendency to view the world only from one’s own point of view – unable to take another person’s point of view. Irreversibility?Inability to reverse the direction of a sequence of events Centration? : Tendency to focus only on one aspect of the situation Conservation? An understanding that just because the physical shape of something changes does not mean that the amount inside changes
What is the emphasis of Zygotsky’s theory? Interested in how children come to understand the social world. How did he view children and the information that they are born with? Believed children were cultural blank slates and that parents taught them about the world around them. What is the zone of proximal development? and how does it relate to learning? Range between the skills that children CAN ALREADY perform and those that they would be able to perform if they had proper guidance
What is an example of a primary sex characteristic? Changes directly involved in reproduction – ie testes, uterus
What is an example of a secondary sex characteristic? Physical characteristics that differentiate men from women but are NOT directly involved in reproduction – ie deepening of the voice, breast enlargement...
