COURSE DESCRIPTION Social Psychology is the “scientific study of the way in which people’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are influenced by the real or imagined presence of other people” (italics added, Aronson et al., 2019, p. 3). Topics that will be covered in this course include: personal perception and social cognition, attitudes and persuasion, interpersonal influence and attraction, and helping relationships. COURSE OBJECTIVES Mastery of the material Kofi Annan, the former United Nations General-Secretary (who just recently passed away), held this view: “Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family.” By the end of this course, you should have a solid understanding of the fundamental questions that social psychologists have asked, how they attempted to answer those questions, the results they obtained, and the insights and applications gained from their investigative efforts. Critical thinking about social psychology phenomena We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are. -Anaïs Nin Social psychological research suggests that humans are innately social and as such, naturally seek to understand the world around us. It also suggests that we *all* tend to view this world through our own personal lens of experience. My hope is that this course will demonstrate how important it is to think deeply and critically about the social psychology that we see and hear about every day and to question our (and others’) assumptions and interpretations so that we may form more complete understandings of all of our complex social realities. Application. One of the reasons why I love social psychology as much as I do is that it is full of practical advice. Want someone special to find you irresistible? Need to skip the line at the Bookstore? Want your roommate to want to pick up their underwear off of the floor? Then stay tuned! And if you are interested in understanding other social behavior and issues like intergroup relations, prejudice, and justice, you can find that here, too. As Kurt Lewin (1951), one of the founders of empirical social psychology, once wrote: “There is nothing as practical as a good theory.”

COURSE REQUIREMENTS AT A GLANCE iClicker Quizzes In-class tests (best 3 out of 4) Final exam: Total

10% 60% 30% 100%

COURSE REQUIREMENTS IN MORE DETAIL 1. iCLICKER QUIZZES (10%). On many non-test days, there will be short iClicker quizzes. These quizzes may be administered at any point (beginning, middle or end) of the class, and may be on any material covered or assigned since the last quiz, including material to be covered in class that day. Each question will be worth 2 points; you will receive one point per question for attempting to answer each question and another point for each correct answer. Your two lowest quiz grades will be dropped. 2. IN –CLASS TESTS (60%). FOUR (4) in-class, closed-notes, closed-text tests will be administered online through Collab. These tests will consist of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank and short answer questions based on the material covered since the previous test. Your lowest test grade will be dropped. 3. FINAL EXAM (30%). A closed-notes, closed-book, cumulative final exam will be administered on Monday, December 9th, 9am – 12pm in Gilmer 130. For all in-class tests and the final exam, you are responsible for bringing a functioning (i.e., internet-accessing, adequate battery life; mobile devices, including tablets, are discouraged) LAPTOP. A short, no-credit, practice exam will be given during class prior to the first test date.

Participant Pool Research Requirement As a supplement to lecture, you are required to participate in six (6) hours of experimental research studies, or to complete an equivalent alternate assignment, which involves reviewing six (6) empirical articles. If you have already done this in a different 1000 or 2000-level Psychology course at UVA, then you do not need to complete this requirement again. ALL STUDENTS (even if you think you already completed the requirement) must read the document entitled “Accessing the Participant Pool.docx,” which can be found in the resources section of the course Collab page. This document provides detailed instructions on how to complete the requirement and what to do if you already completed the requirement in a previous semester. You may begin the requirement on September 2nd. Three (3) of the hours must be completed by October 25th, and the remaining three (3) must be completed by midnight on the last day of classes, December 6th. If you fail to complete the research requirement, your final grade will be lowered by one step (e.g., B- will become C+). Please direct all questions about this requirement or the website to [email protected].

CLASSROOM/COURSE POLICIES Attendance and missed coursework. Class attendance is expected. Missed tests may be made up only in cases of serious illness or death within the student's immediate family, religious holidays and participation in NCAA athletic contests. It is the student’s obligation to make the necessary arrangements for missed tests ahead of time whenever possible. 1. For missed tests due to religious observance: submit your request in writing at least two (2) weeks in advance to the instructor (Mason). 2. For missed tests due to participation in NCAA athletic contests: submit your request and your athletic department paperwork at least two (2) weeks in advance to the instructor (Mason). 3. For missed tests due to extraordinary circumstances: submit your request and your signed Honor Statement as soon as possible. Requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Keep in mind that your definition of “extraordinary” may not be the same as my definition. iClicker quizzes cannot be made up. If you must miss more than 2 iClicker quizzes for the reasons listed above, please see me for accommodations. Postponing the final exam. Per University policy, final exams cannot be taken early, but can be postponed if you have three final exams scheduled on two consecutive days. If you wish to take advantage of this policy, you must complete the REQUEST FOR EXAM POSTPONEMENT WITHIN FINAL EXAM PERIOD form (http://college.as.virginia.edu/forms). Please note the Dean’s Office deadline listed on this form and plan accordingly.

!

Extra Credit. The only opportunities for extra credit in this course will come in the form of extra credit questions on iClicker quizzes. The percentage of extra credit questions that you answer correctly will be applied to your final course score, for a maximum of 3 points. For example, if you answered correctly 5 out of 10 extra credit questions (50%), 1.5 points (50% of 3) will be added to your final course score. You may also earn extra credit by completing the course evaluation by the deadline (to be determined once the evaluations have been made available). Use of communication/electronic devices. Recent research (references available upon request) provides compelling evidence that electronic devices in the classroom are not a good idea, for you and the people around you; even a cell phone placed face-down seems to have a negative effect. Therefore, use of laptops, phones and tablets will not be allowed and I ask that all electronic devices be put away during class. Furthermore, please silence all notifications (including vibration alerts) and sounds on all devices that you might bring (but not use) into the classroom with you. If you have a compelling reason for an exception to this policy, please let me know. Special Needs. I am very happy to work with students who have received approval from the Student Disability Access Center (SDAC) for special classroom accommodations (e.g., seating, note-taking assistance, extended time). Please let me know during the first week of classes so that together you and I can plan for these accommodations. Academic dishonesty. Full compliance with the UVA Honor Code and System is expected. Suspected violations will be reported to the Honor Committee, and if you believe that you may have committed an Honor Offense, you are strongly encouraged to file a Conscientious Retraction by calling the Honor Offices at (434) 924-7602. Please remember that for your retraction to be considered valid it must be filed before you know that anyone else is aware of the potential honor offense. More information can be found at www.virginia.edu/honor. Specifically, the following are not allowed in this course: • •

Receiving or giving any aid (via a person, a book, a device, etc) on the i>Clicker quizzes, the in-class tests, or the final exam. Recording, copying, saving or sharing in any format any part or whole of a graded (or to-be-graded) assignment. For learning and studying purposes, you will have access to questions and answers after work has been graded so there should be no need to make your own recordings or copies. Otherwise submitting any work not your own as your own work.
