Description

Do not include any part of this method in your submitted assignment. You should write your APA formatted research report as if this section is present. Method Participants 109 introductory psychology students voluntarily took part in the current study as part of requirements of their course. Participants self-identified as female (n=83), male (n=24), nonbinary/third gender (n=1), and preferred not to say (n=1), with a mean age of 21.7 years (SD = 4.21; range 18-42). Participants completed the study as part of their allocated tutorial class, either in person or online. All participants completed the study via Qualtrics, an online survey platform. Materials The study used three self-report instruments. Participants were also requested to provide demographic and anthropometric information. Fit Ideal Internalization Test (FIIT; Uhlmann et al., 2019). The FIIT was used to measure the level of internalization of the muscular (or fit/toned) body ideal in women. Participants who identified as ‘female’ responded to 20 items on a 5-point response scale ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). Scores for each item were summed to give a total score – higher scores indicate greater internalization of the muscular body ideal. A median split was used to create two groups of women – those with low versus high internalization of the muscular body ideal. Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire – 4 Revised (SATAQ4R; Schaefer et al., 2017). The SATAQ-4R was used to measure the level of internalization of the muscular body ideal in men. Participants who identified as ‘male’ responded to four items on a 5-point response scale ranging from 1 (definitely disagree) to 5 (definitely agree). Scores for each item were added up to give a total score – higher scores indicate greater internalization of

the muscular body ideal. A median split was used to create two groups of men – those with low versus high internalization of the muscular body ideal. Muscularity-Oriented Eating Test (MOET; Murray et al., 2019). The MOET was used to measure symptoms of muscularity-oriented disordered eating in all participants. Participants responded to 15 items on a 5-point response scale ranging from 0 (Never true) to 4 (Always true). Scores for each item were added up to give a total score – higher scores indicate greater engagement in muscularity-oriented disordered eating. Design This study was correlational and, based on their responses on the muscular body internalization measures, men and women were each classified into one of two groups as noted earlier (low or high internalization). Scores on muscularity-oriented disordered eating were statistically compared among low and high internalization groups within each sex. Procedure Following obtaining informed consent, participants completed the 25-minute online survey as part of a larger study. Participants were presented with a debriefing document upon completion. The University of Sydney’s Human Research Ethics Committee approved the study procedures (protocol no. 2019/950).
