Avoiding Academic Misconduct • UNE uses sophisticated software to detect plagiarism • It detects passages of text copied from articles, websites, and past and present student assignments
Avoiding Academic Misconduct • Paraphrase straight away • When making notes from other sources put it in your own words straight away • You will never have to remember whether the words were yours or not • In psychology we very rarely use direct quotes • No need for any direct quotes in the PSYC101 essay
• Don’t forget to cite • When you write about an idea that is not yours, indicate the original source of the idea even if you write the idea in your own words
• Don’t reuse work from other units • Submitting your own work that was prepared for a previous assessment is a form of self plagiarism • Each new unit means preparing a new assignment • Self cite if necessary
Avoiding Academic Misconduct • Be careful working together • There is a fine line between general talk about assignments with study buddies and collusion • Collusion (submitting work that is partly produced by another individual and claiming it as your own) is Academic Misconduct • Make sure your assignment is your own work • Keep assignment chat general
• Do not share your current or past assignments with other students • Well meaning students trying to help by giving their assignment to a friend as an ‘example’ have run into trouble when the friend submitted the exact assignment as their own.
• Start preparing for assessments well in advance
Final Exam (50%) – must attempt • Final exam will take place in exam period • Exact date will be available later in trimester • 100 MCQs in 135 mins (all topics covered) • Supervised exam options • On Campus • In Exam Centre • Online
Online Supervised Exam • Online supervised exams are an option for this unit • Take your exam on your computer in your own space • Research suggests that information is more accurately recalled in the environment it was learned • Supervised via webcam
