Ex: An older sibling tells his preschool sister not to talk to strangers, expressing his parents’ values to his younger sister

F. Minimization  allows you to decrease the intensity of a situation. When minimization is used to protect , it keeps the child from experiencing an intense feeling. i.

Ex: if parents divorce, most children feel responsible for their parents breakup so they minimize it by saying “ my parents don’t fight, they just agrue a lot” when adults use minimization it decreases the significance of

their behavior consequently they don’t recognize the effect their behavior has on others G. Projection  A person attributes thought or impulses to someone else i.

Ex: A person who denies any sexual feelings for a coworker accuses him of sexual harassment

H. Rationalization  A person tries to give a logical or socially acceptable explanation for questionable behavior (“behavior justification”) i.

Reaction formation  A person develops conscious attitudes and behavior patterns that are opposite to what he or she would really like to do i.
