PYB208 COUNSELLING THEORY AND PRACTICE

UNIT OUTLINE

OVERVIEW This unit provides students with an overview of the discipline of counselling by exploring the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of the foremost counselling approaches and the skills, and processes each draws on to support change. Approaches from different schools of counselling will be profiled and examined including Psychoanalytic, Cognitive/Behavioural, Humanistic, Systemic and PostStructuralist. Through a consideration of own values and an exploration of epistemologies, students are invited to consider and develop their own framework for practice. Emphasis will also be placed on the importance of the therapeutic relationship and the micro skills students will require to develop relationships in their future practice. With a recognition of the importance of self, students will be introduced to the practice of reflection and will be invited to consider and review existing ideas and beliefs and how these align with the different approaches to counselling.

LEARNING OUTCOMES On successful completion of this unit, you should be able to: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Identify and evaluate the micro skills of counselling Describe the major theoretical approaches to counselling Develop an understanding of the application of particular theoretical approaches Develop awareness of the role of self in the counselling relationship

LEARNING APPROACHES The unit is presented through a weekly lecture which will include live demonstration, video clips and student participation. The tutorials are an essential experiential feature of this unit, which will provide an opportunity for practice, feedback, and discussion and progressive assessment.
