Introduction Qantas Airways Ltd. is one of the most well known domestic and international airline in Australia and is also a leader in the Asia-pacific region. It is one of the ten largest airlines in the world and is considered to be the third oldest (after KLM of the Netherlands and Avianca). Qantas connects Australia to 81 destinations in 40 other countries worldwide and also operates extensive domestic services in both Australia and New Zealand. The company also operates several regional airlines in Australia and is a partner in a budget start-up based in Singapore. Qantas and its regional subsidiaries carry more than 30 million passengers a year. Qantas maintains a number of alliances and code share arrangements; the company is a member of the oneworld global airline alliance led by American Airlines and British Airways plc, which is Qantas’s largest shareholder with an 18 percent interest. Opportunities Major overhaul in market share after the Ansett Collapse. Better online promotions and loyalty bonus for customers to increase the travels. More international destinations especially in Asia. Tie-ups with international airlines for a combined service offering to customers. Jet star operations to be increased on routes where price competition is huge.

Qantas has been the leading airline carrier in Australia and have managed to build their brand effectively and efficiently with the superior services that are being offered and at the same time have also made their presence in the low budget carriers with Jet Star. In the last

few years, the operational margins have been low mainly because of some of the global factors but the management was well aware of the situation and has been focusing on reducing the operational costs by cutting down some of the features that has been considered not important for them. Overall they are all set to rein the Australian air the the days to come provided the management is flexible enough to make the changes and is flexible with it decision making based on the dynamics of the market. Executive summary The purpose of this report is to firstly identify and cover the strengths, opportunities, weaknesses and threats of Qantas Airlines. With all the data collected, we can understand the influences which affect the business and identify the core competencies, key strengths and major weaknesses. Next, this report covers the current issues facing the business. Qantas, as a major airline company in Australia, needs to face and take action with the issues and challengers to ensure the future profitability of the business. One of the main issues were carbon emissions. Not only was this one of the biggest issues that Qantas had to face, but it is also an issue that Qantas will need to take concern over the next few decades. Despite emission reductions from automobiles and fuel-efficient engines, the rapid growth of air travel in recent years had increased in total pollution attributable to aviation. Finally, this report covers the future of Qantas. Right now Qantas focuses on what they can control to secure a great future ahead of them. This includes lowering the cost base, cutting the capital commitments, suspending growth in non-essential areas and etc. But referring back to the issues Qantas has to face, making the environment clean may possibly be the most important step that Qantas needs to take....
