2 QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE SUMMARY Quantitative and Qualitative Summary Qualitative Summary The qualitative research study “Novice Nurses’ Perception of Working Night Shifts: A Qualitative study” by Jahromi, Moattari, and Sharif, focuses on novice nurses’ perceptions on working nightshifts. Nursing is one of many occupations that requires employees to work night shifts in order to keep rotations going. Night shifts are poorly designed working schedules that not only affect the nurse’s lifestyle, but also negatively affects the quality of patient care and satisfaction. The design of research utilized in this qualitative research was phenomenology, this is used to identify real life experiences through interviews to understand and focus on the phenomena of their experiences. In the research, the researchers were questioning the viewpoints of nurses on working night shifts. The study waws conducted on 20 nurses who worked night shifts in two different university hospitals in Iran. The 20 nurses were interviewed in a focus group that lasted for 40 to 80 minutes by one researcher who asked clarifying questions. There were five major themes evaluated in the study: value system, physical and psychological problems, social relationships, organizational problems, and appropriate opportunity. In order to build a good relationship with the participants and to obtain reliable data from the participants, interviews were taken in places that were selected by the participant. A finding from the research is that participants complained most about their physical and psychological well-being. Participants complained about “stress due to workplace conditions, insomnia, sleeping disorders, and physical problems” (Jahromi, Moattari, & Sharif, 2013).

Quantitative Summary

3 QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE SUMMARY The quantitative research study by Maan Hameed Ibrahim Al-Ameri in 2017 titled, “Night Shift and its Impact upon the Quality of Life of Nurses Working at the Teaching Hospitals of the Medical City Complex in Baghdad City, Iraq”, concentrates on the association of the quality of life and different demographics such as age, gender, marital status, level of education, and duration of career that have affected night shift nurses. The design utilized in this study is descriptive research, providing systematic information and describing the current status of an identified variable. The study questions the influence of nurses working night shift’s quality of life, as well as finding a correlation between their quality of life and different demographic characteristics. The study was conducted over 5 months including 70 nurses from five different teaching hospitals in Iraq, while taking place at the Medical City Complex. All nurses were given a two-part questionnaire that included demographic characteristics and a scale that was used to assess the levels of quality of life. The scale included five domains: psychological, physical, spiritual and religious, social, environment and housing. After the questionnaire, nurses are measured in four level ratings based on their results: Very weak, weak, intermediate, and good. The findings of the research disclosed that more than half of the nurses showed very weak and weak quality of life (Al-Ameri, 2017). When studying male nurses and female nurses, the male nurses had a higher quality of life. Finally, as they compared married and not married nurses, they found that married nurses have a lower rating on the scale.
