1 Sample Rhetorical Analysis ENG-105 July 15, 2020 Janet Wakefield-Darvas The CDC and How They Appeal to their Audience There is a way to make a book, article or website intriguing to readers to hook them in and make them want to keep reading. Authors use a technique that will intrigue their audience through the rhetorical triangle of appeals, which are pathos, ethos, and logos. An example of an author that uses these appeals would be by the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) article called, “What is ADHD?”. The CDC uses these appeals to intrigue their audience to gain awareness of ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) because not everyone knows what ADHD is or how to get diagnosed for it. This article explains what ADHD is, the symptoms of it, how it is treated, and where to go for help. The CDC has published this article with the intended purpose of spreading awareness about ADHD while utilizing logos, ethos, and pathos to convey supporting information about the condition and appeal to their intended audience. The first appeal in which the CDC uses in this article is pathos, which is the appeal to emotion, by appealing to parents with children who possibly have ADHD. For example, there is a picture of a mother and child embracing and a caption that reads: “COVID-19: Information for parenting children with ADHD”. The author provides a sense of urgency within this article to parents and adults with ADHD by using a heading in bold letters that reads as “Get help!” so that the audience will feel the need to react right away to resources that are provided to them. The author also uses awareness by showing that ADHD can cause problems in children at school. Children could be missing school days if they are not properly treated (Classi eta al, 2012). The

2 author has conveyed messages of emotion to appeal to its audience in which can be effective, but the author also uses other appeals to get the reader’s attention. The next appeal in this article is ethos, which is the appeal to credibility and trustworthiness. The author of the CDC has written this article by using three credible resources to provide information about ADHD: National Resource Center on ADHD, Center for Parent Information and Resources, and National Institutes of Mental Health (“What is ADHD?”, 2020). The CDC would be another credible resource that is used because the government uses them to provide the public with information, funding, and awareness about diseases and/or disorders. The author also provides their audience with research that they have conducted about ADHD. For example, the author lists the symptoms of ADHD, how it is diagnosed, the types of ADHD, and what the treatment options are. The audience will believe that this author is trustworthy because he or she used credible resources and provided the information in great detail. The third appeal that the CDC has used to appeal to its audience is logos, which is the appeal of logic. The author of the CDC uses logos to show that mainly children have ADHD, but it could be present into adulthood (“What is ADHD?”, 2020). In fact, according to a national survey done in 2016, the estimation of children that have been diagnosed is six point one million- or nine-point four percent (“Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder”, 2020). The author also explains to its audience what the causes of ADHD are which they believe is mainly caused through genetics and then some studies have shown that is due to other factors like brain injuries, environmental issues during pregnancy, and premature delivery (“What is ADHD?”, 2020). The author of this website has done a great job of using logic to convey awareness of ADHD.

3 Authors have used the technique of appeal to keep its audience hooked on what they are reading. The author of the CDC that wrote the “What is ADHD?” article, has done this by effectively conveying pathos, ethos, and logos to appeal to its audience. The author has used emotion through pictures and statements to excite emotion throughout the article, credibility by providing credible resources, and logic by providing facts of ADHD. This article was written to bring awareness of ADHD to parents who have children and/or adults that may or may not have been diagnosed with ADHD. This would be because people look to the government to provide awareness and funding for diseases and/or disorders, which would be why the CDC chose to write about ADHD. Finally, the audience can take what they have learned through this article and advise other people about ADHD and how to seek help for it.
