Doctorow’s novel is about not only race relations in the U.S. pre world war I, but also about the immigrant experience. Write a paper that addresses both issues as well as issues of class and the deleterious effects of racism and class on people’s lives. Coalhouse said to Booker T. Washington on page 282 of the novel: “….possibly we might both be servants of our color and insist on the truth of our manhood and the respect that it demands.” Consider this statement and Washington’s response to it in your consideration of racial issues and tensions in the novel. What was Coalhouse saying here? And, why was Washington stunned by his remark? 2. Both Doctorow’s novel and Hamlet are about the dangers and justification of revenge. On one hand, Hamlet is asked to take revenge because of his father’s murder in order to correct a wrong, but the entire play highlights the dangers of revenge to not only the social order, but to interpersonal relationships. Likewise, Coalhouse Walker uses revenge in Ragtime as a means to right a wrong and to seek social justice in a racist American system. Write a paper in which you discuss whether or not these characters are justified in seeking justice in the ways that they do. Also, include in your discussion Laertes’ revenge against Hamlet for killing his father, Polonius. Did the revenge help them? Or, did it make things worse? Construct a solid argument that argues for/against these ideas....
