Ransom Themes: Family Ch 1: - Achilles stands on the shore, hoping to hear his mother’s (sea goddess) voice - His half man-half god self is talked about deeply - As a child he could summon his mother Thetis, yet as he gets older he enters the “rough world of men” and is becoming mortal - Missing his son, Neaptolemus, who he hasn’t seen since the start of the Trojan War, 9 years ago - He is also haunted by the ghosts of his adopted brother, Patroclus, and Hector - Hector kills Patroclus thinking it was Achilles - Achilles was full of greif and did not want to bury him as he was so close with his brother - Patroclus ghost came to Achilles and said he must bury him to finish his journey to the under world - In revenge, Achilles kills Hector - Hector then warns him that he will die soon - Achilles men now think he is nuts - Achilles mutilates Hector’s body by dragging it behind the chariot which the Gods then return it to the original state each night - Achilles realises something must change to get him out of his sadness Ch 2: -

Opens with Priam, having trouble sleeping since death of son Priam has a sense that a God is about to appear, his power as a king Knows two children shares his ability to communicate with the Gods When Priam recalls the moment when Achilles kills Hector, he thinks the Gods are mocking him for being so devoured to him Goddess Iris appears, telling him it’s purely a matter of chance and apart of human life Priam then visions himself taking a ransom to Achilles on a humble cart with a common driver, even though he is a rich king Excited by the vision and excited to tell wife Hecuba Hecuba gets mad, saying you don’t have the same connection to our son as you never gave birth to him He says I need to take a gift to Achilles to get his body back Hecuba says Achilles is evil and he’ll never do that He replies it might work because its unusual Hecuba mad because this plan is chance not fate Flashback as Priam tells story of how he became him When he was a boy, Troy was invaded by a warrior called Heraclius He was then orphaned due to this, and his sister was captured by Heraclius Heraclius gave sister one wish which was get Priam out of slavery, which he granted but renamed him Priam, meaning the price paid

Back to present - Deaphus says the plan is not worth risking life as king and below royalty - Priam demanded what he saw in his vision, which his sons got - Sons returned with Sommax, who Priam renames to Idious, and his mule Beauty - Cart loads up as birds fly overhead - Helenus realises it is an eagle which is a sign from Gods that they approve Ch 3: Ch 4: Ch 5:

Begins with Sommax and Priam going along the humble path They stop by a river (water having a significant role representing spiritual realm) Sommax encouraging king to dip feet in water as well as eat Sommax tells story of daughter making gimmicks Priam seeing connection between earth and spiritual Starting to enjoy the spontaneity of the environment Sommax reveals his only remaining family is daughter in law and granddaughter, losing seven of his children As sommax tells the story of his son dying trying to lift a wagon, Priam reflected on his own son dying and realised the less connection he had with him Sommax tells story of another son dying as the mule, Beauty slipped and fell into the river and drowned the boy Sommax had hugged and cried to the animal not get mad Orcalus is met, who both men are suspicious of Orcalus helps them to cross the river, reassuring them of him The young man then starts talking about his daughter in law, who Sommax hasn’t spoken of Priam then realises this is the messenger God, Hermes Priam assures Sommax that he won’t take them to the underworld but help them to Achilles Hermes makes himself invisible to open the heavy gate for them into Achilles camp Achilles soldiers are stunned by this

Opens by returning to Achilles Achilles still angry and resentful, particularly of his attendant He starts to feel there is a God in his hut with him First thinks it is Protroculus as he sees a figure Then sees Priam, but Achilles mistakes him for his elderly father Attendants come in and warn him of a stranger Priam explains he has brought a guide and ransom in Tries to make connection as a father to Achilles Achilles struggles to connect with son Achilles retrieves Hectors body and receives relief Priam wants to learn more about Achilles Cart leaves camp

Priam and Somax leave the camp as they both note how the war between the Greeks and Trojan’s devasted the landscape Priam asks Somax to stop cart Priam begins to weep over Hector’s body, connecting with his son Reminds Somax between death of own son Priam relects on how journey has changed him and how he will be welcomed home Achilles also feels rejuvenated, but he is not aware that his death is coming Flash forward to Neoptolemus haunted by his brutal killing of Priam, asking for father’s (Achilles) forgiveness Back to present where Somax only takes little interest in figure, implied it is Helen of Troy He is more concerned about gifts and stories he will give to family However, none of his listeners believed he accompanied Priam on journey as he is known for embellishing the truth Biggest claim to fame will be the mule, Beauty...
