Description

WHAT NATURE OFFERS TO HUMANKIND Nature is the phenomena of the physical world collectively, including plants, animals, the landscape, and other features and products of the earth, as opposed to humans or human creations. In comparison to man, nature is represented to be more significant and powerful throughout the novel. While man has little to offer to nature, nature's offers to humans is limitless. Throughout the novel it has been shown how nature provides comfort and it eases pain and grief. This is shown through the characters; Priam and Somax. Malouf represents Beauty as an admirable model of coping with grief and loss. Beauty is supposedly responsible for his son's death, having lost her, footing, and possibly ''knocked him sideways''. However unlike Achilles, who vents his anger on Hector for the loss of Patroclus, Somax who '' felt like punching her'', instead comforted her. The two became inseparable; Somax became incredibly fond of her. Malouf presents this not only as a preferable manner of dealing with grief but also suggest that it helps Somax deal with loss and it enriches the grieving father. On the other hand, Priam also finds comfort in nature as he settles his foot in the water at the beach, it helps him cope with his uncertainty and pain over the death of Hector. Nature connects humans to others, in the case of Achilles, the sea enables him to connect to his mother. Malouf gives Achilles' mother the tittle of the ''goddess of sea'' and while she is immortal, Achilles' father is mortal. this highlights the idea that nature is eternal and prevailing while man is mortal and over decades man is forgotten but nature prevails. SUPPORTING EVIDENCE '' Then he stood staring down at his naked feet, which were bony and white'' through the sensory imagery it is shown that Priam is quite old and weak while on the other hand the boar is quite powerful and lively. ''the boar's fierce energy and hot muscle'', the juxtaposition between the king's weakness and the boats strength and power illuminates the fact that nature is more powerful than man. ''letting the goodness of the cool clean water extend its reviving benefit from his feet to his whole body'' as a result of the poetic language in specific alliteration, it can be seen that Priam is experiencing comfort consolation as a result of his interaction with the water. Thus, it shows how nature has the power of consolation as Priam is able to cope with the grief over his son's death. ''his spirit, which till now had been clouded by uncertainty and a fear of so much that was still unknown, cleared and lightened'' the use of the metaphor illuminates the fact that nature provides certainty and light to our lives. '' The sea has many voices. The voice this man is listening for is the voice of his mother'' through the personification of the sea it can be deduced that nature connects man to others, in Achilles case it connects him to his mother. Once again it is shown how powerful nature really is.  ''he was his father's son and mortal'' while men ate mortal, nature prevails as the mule '' beauty'' is remembered decades after ''the black mule who is still remembered''. Shows how the mule is remembered yet the tale of Priam is not believed to be a reality. This highlights how nature has more importance than man as nature us eternal. Now Nature is not as respected as then as humans now pollute and they are always concerned about technology, there seems to be no connection to nature. N al....
