Raphael vs. Michelangelo Comparison Assignment

The holy presentation of a family is depicted by two artists from the same time period. Artist Raphael painted the Madonna of the Meadows made during 1504. The material used is Oil paint and the dimension of the painting is 44 in by 35 in. Artist Michelangelo painted The Donni Tondo during 1504-1506. The materials used are Tempera Paint and Oil paint. The dimensions of the painting are 47 1⁄2 in. Between the two paintings, Madonna of the Meadows and The Doni Tondu will be comparing specific characteristics of each painting. The first characteristic is the presentation of the holy family between Madonna of the Meadows and The Donni Tondu. Madonna of the Meadows holy family depicts the Virgin Mary, Christ Child, and Saint John the Baptist. The beauty of Mary, Christ, and Saint John the Baptist expresses their divinity. Donni Todor holy family depicts the Christ child, Mary, Saint Joseph along with John the Baptist in the foreground and contains five ambiguous nude male figures in the background. The presentation of the holy family is seen as playful and loving. As Mary and saint joseph protect and support the Christ child. The second characteristic is the relationship between the figures in both paintings has changed. The Madonna of the Meadows shows Christ on the left standing on his mother's foot to show dependence on his mother. The Christ child also seeks independence as he looks up to Mary and takes the book. Then Mary looks to Christ’s child to suggest if he is ready for that knowledge. Saint John the Baptist who knees towards Christ. Done Tondu shows the relationship between the figures by Saint Joseph protecting Mary by the position she is placed. The Christ child is the made focus because Saint Joseph and Mary are supporting him by her shoulder and Saint Joseph by holding him. This relationship shows more as a family then Raphael painting.

The third characteristic is the composition is different between the two artworks. The composition of Madonna of the Meadow is focused on Christ. By Saint John the Baptist looking at Christ then Christ looking up at the Virgin Mary. Then Mary redirecting the viewers back to Christ. The composition of Donni Tondu is focused on the figures being on earth. For example, seeing the mountain in the background, the people causally taking, and Mary and saint joseph touching the ground represent their relationship to earth. The last characteristic is the landscape in both artworks. The Madonna of the Meadow is not a religious environment. The virgin Army sits on a rock in a field with a beautiful atmospheric perspective behind her creating a lovely environment. The landscape shows the god world that he created that is an expression of divinity. The landscape of Donni Tondu is different because it shows how god has created people and the environment they live in, Also, it shows the relationship the figures must earth....
