Reaction Paper 4 Sex offenders became a serious issue with the public around the 1990’s. There was a large increase in the sex offender population and the severe cases is what brought change for the rest of society. Such as Jacob Wetterling, he was walking home with his friend when he was taken by a man. The man was a sex offender and if the cops had some sort of registry to check instead of starting from scratch, then things maybe could have turned out a little differently. Jacob’s case took several years to come to a close. This case resulted in the sex offender registry, meaning the Federal Government requires states to keep a list of their sex offenders or risk losing federal crime prevention funding. This case ended up saving several children in the long run and is very beneficial to the public, once it was released to the public. There are some concerns that once these individuals are known the public will treat them differently, this could happen, though I think it still does more good than harm. Another strategy for sex offenders is a risk assessment. This is where psychologists can try to predict through history, treatment compliance, substance abuse, psychopathy, and sexual deviance if a sex offender is ready to be released back into society. This is very controversial because it can go wrong or it can actually work. Offenders can work the system, say what the court wants to hear

and look like the model inmate, such as Michael Kelly, to get out. Then there are individuals who actually deserve to be let go because they are doing fairly well. Treatment centers are a big part of the healing process for those that have been sentenced there instead of prison. Court based treatment is another strategy that try to rehabilitate sex offenders. These programs do their best to give these individuals a chance at learning how to control themselves and get back into society. There are several problems with this though, such as: inmates are allowed to have sex with whoever or whenever, the hospitals word never counted in court because they were considered “unreliable”, individuals can walk free even when committed such as Michael Kelly. I believe that the registration is working great and keeps the public informed when a sex offender moves into their neighborhood. With this is will continue to save lives and create more awareness. Other strategies I think need more work because they are not doing society a good service in my opinion. The video brought my attention to the fact that the system is flawed. The court never believed the hospital, individuals could go free without supervision, thought process about having sex was wrong (how it didn’t alarm them), easy access to drugs or basically anything, and the psychologists were terrible. I definitely believe these systems do not work. Though I have heard since the video several aspects

have changed about it. I can’t speak for if the new system is working or not because I have not researched on it. Honestly, I think we are right were we need to be. Yes things do not work, but there is not really another way I could propose to change anything. The only thing I feel like would work are stricter laws on the treatment center and risk assessment....
