Reading Response 6

I decided to base my response on the teaching method of teaching online. I found this topic in the school library database. The reason I chose it was because of COVID-19 and how much it has affected me in the past. The article I read, “Reathinking Online Instruction: From Content Transmission to Cognitive Immersion”, by Betty Ladner, Donald Beagle, James R. Steele, and Linda Steele, focuses on the importance of online teaching and how it affects students. It also talks about ways to improve lessons and understanding of materials being taught to students. In this article, it talks about an experiment Beagle did with an online course for students. This online course had its own website and the instructor provided all textual information needed but also had a section for the information they thought was most valuable. He had students take this course and get feedback not only on their grades but what they thought about the course. The feedback was positive but it was because of how detailed this website course was. Students thought the way to retrieve the information needed was easy access and really enjoyed the notes that the instructor thought was most important. The experiment was put to test the online teaching now in concerns of the management of online class setups. I will use this in my classroom in the future if I do online courses, or in the case of COVID-19, if I was forced to be moved online, I would try my hardest to make materials easy to access and go as much into depth as I can. In relation to elementary education, I would try my hardest to have the classes laid out easy for students and parents to access and understand. For example, I would have all classes based off of one website under different tabs. I know it is easy if teachers post lessons in video form. After that I would post review activities on the same page for each class. I think this is such an important topic to understand and focus on since technology is such a large

part of school systems now. As time goes on, the amount of technology improves everyday. Kids growing up now have so much more access and learning opportunities with technology than kids twenty years ago. This will just keep increasing as time goes by, and as they grow up more jobs will be using technology and expect generations now to know how to use it. I think it all starts with using these resources in early education.
