Xin Li Arch 314 Week 14 Reading Response In David Joselit’s “After Art”, the section of “Format”, he mainly talks about that architecture are currently having the characteristics of being a “format”, which means that architects are using “dynamic mechanism for aggregating content” (Joselit 56). Joselit argues that the most important thing is how art can be retrieved by reconstructing, replicating and improving instead of the new creation and production. Then, Joselit introduces four types of aesthetic connections to explain the idea of currency for art, and different connections are creating distinct value of art. Joselit points out that some countries are asking for their native historic art works back because art is experiencing the power of the currency, and architecture as well. I agree with Joselit’s ideas in this article that I also thinks art works should be used for economic benefits. When we are reviewing art and architecture, we should think critically on the value of art itself to prevent the value fading away from our hands. “Too Much Information” is an aesthetic theory paper written by Sylvia Lavin. Lavin focuses on the Fourteenth “Venice Architecture Biennale”, which is the longest and the most extensive exhibition so far in Architecture Biennale (Lavin 1). In Szeemann’s eyes, those works are not art; instead, they should be considered as “information” and “documentation” (Lavin 1). Comparing to Szeemann, Rem Koolhaas has a different thought that the actual function of a building defines the truth and reality of architecture instead of the representational images. Koolhaas also claims the idea of interdependency of individuals that it is essential to cooperate with each other in one firm in order to become powerful and influential in the field. I also think when we are working and interning in one architectural firm, we should be able to communicate and understand others because then we can make spectacular projects. Also, mentioned in the first reading, architects need to truly comprehend the value and idea of one’s works rather than simply scanning and copying....
